not feeling well

I just wanted to add my good wishes and encouragement Ally...it isn't easy..I've learned loads from the low carb thread. I got a good handle on what I should be eating. And the most important thing of all is learning to eat to my meter. Testing before and 2 hours after meals really opened my eyes...there is such support from so many people on the forum. As you are discovering..people truly wish you the best and will help every step of the way...with the added bonus of feeling so much better...so much energy and better sleep when you get your blood sugar down...I can't stress enough the importance of having a meter on hand always...when you look at your health the relatively small outlay of a meter and strips...well its so important. Even if your surgery won't give you one...good luck and keep us posted. Maybe by posting what you eat will help and the ecperienced guys on here will point out maybe where you are going wrong?

Personally I fear that the dsn will say 50% of plate to be carbs and eat carbs at every meal.

Ally please bear in mind there are so many people here that avoid bananas and fruit and have lower carb meals and good snacks if they need them and they have achieved better levels and better health. Some have had to go against the advice that dsn's gave them.

I think that you must ask what their reasons are for not changing your medication.

Something is still amiss here, You say A&E did a blood test and it was 30. Legally they have to do another blood test before discharging you, what was that result, what did they do in the A&E to lower your levels? What bg level did they release you at?

You must consider whether that doughnut and other foods you had ate, was a partial cause to raising your levels. I actually fear that you will be seen so regularly in A&E that you will not be taken seriously. (If that makes sense). It could be a case of "oh its a weekend again and oh Ally is here again, just check her blood, and send her on her way telling her to go to GP".

As much as I hate to say it, you might be right - though I hope you're not. I once worked in A&E for a few weeks and I noticed that when patients came in who could/should have been cared for by the GP, the GP did get an ear-bashing. but the patient also suffered with sub-standard care too. They tended to get fobbed off a bit.

I have heard comments made by staff about 1 patient at our Practice who used to try and book another appointment straight after seeing the clinicians... Because of this patient all clinicians now either book the repeat appt if needed or give a bit of paper to give to the receptionist. One clinician has actually said there is nothing wrong with the patient...

I don't want Ally to become a regular at A&E and to be thought of in a similar sort of thought process.

GP practices in the same sense want to know that you are taking meds and having better eating habits etc. Otherwise they too will get exasperated at the time taken up with patients that aren't following their advice when they could be helping people that can't get appointments and need them.

I hope that Ally can positively adhere to listing every food and getting help and advice and can fully realise the need for change. In return I hope the DSN will consider different meds.

I agree. I have done it myself as I suffer from anxiety and have ended up in A and E a few times as I've thought I was having a stroke/heart attack. The staff are always helpful, but they do point out that a chronic ailment should be being treat at the surgery with the appropriate medication and counselling etc. I'm sure they'd not have been so lovely if it was a weekly occurrence which it will be, if you don't get this sorted soon. Don't wait till the 24th make a meal plan and post it on here and we can see where you need to alter things. No one can stop you from eating a donut, but whenever I feel like a really bad blow out, I tell myself I can have it when I have lost x stone and hopefully less insulin resistant. Only you can do this. We can help and the GP can sort of your medication though I'm not sure that there are many options other than insulin with such high levels.

donnellysdogs, i understand everything you are saying, on thursday if i don,t get any answers from my gp, then i will contact pals

I'm not fed up Ally- just worried that neither you nor your GP is really honing in on a long term plan that will lower levels and keep you complication free. I know you have other issues and you really don't want to add to them with all the nasty things that uncontrolled diabetes can lead to. Keep at it- at the end of the day there's nothing tastes as good as good health feels.

I'm not getting fed up either Ally. Concerned yes for you to find a plan with your nhs people and for eating habits that you find enjoyable and sustainable.
We all want you to be enjoying your life and being able to enjoy better options of foods and able to be peoud of yourself..I would love for you to be still here in a years time full of the joys of living and telling us how good your levels are and that you are down to a good level of weight. That would be the best news ever!!
Todays food sounds brilliant, well done.

Do you like veg or salad type of foods? Just wanting to make sure you get enough vitamins too. You may just want to consider picking up a cheap packet of multivitamins, places like homebargains are cheaper than chemists.

i will look into vitamins
i love sprouts, cabbage, peas, cauliflower and brocolli
i will eat tomatoes and cucumber but not over keen on lettuce

fresh spinach is quite nice too if you're not a lettuce fan :)

Ally

On other posts you have said that gp did discuss insulin and that the nurse was going to speak to gp about you getiing a meter.
What has happened regarding these two points?
Surely there is nothing to discuss ref insulin? If you can't manage without a doughnut or other hugh carb foods then insulin is the only way to avoid hospital again and again and again.
It will be the dsn's decision whether to hive you a meter if she can do prescriptions all she has to do is add strips on.

I'm really confused as to why your medic team only discuss but don't action anything. Is it a discussion as in them saying " you need insulin" and you saying "no"?

I think on ur dsn appt and gp you really ought to say that you try but at times you do not follow the diabetic lifestyle and do have items such as a doughnut. My reckoning is that after the dsn had said well done on better bloods last time you saw her that you thought that you could relax your foods from being low carb, otherwise why would you eat a doughnut or bananas?

Time to be open with your medics, if you struggle with keeping to a sustainable lifestyle of lower carbs then tell them. They can only discuss and conclude from the information that you give them.

To be honest I thought it great that you got to 9.. And thought, yep she'll see the benefits and will be under 8 soon. I was suprised when you were back at 30 and I think that if you are unable to keep to lower carbs (a level of carbs that keeps your bloods in targets) then you have to talk to your medics about this. They would far rather you be honest so they can treat you correctly than you keep going to A&E

donnelleysdog, you are so right about the gp and dns not really speaking together
gp mentioned insulin, but when i last saw him, he said that insulin was a last resort
i dion,t know if dns had mentioned the meter to the gp, maybe she did , i don,t know but i,m going to get answers tomorrow
