Novopen5. Had great difficulty getting hold of a Novopen 5 with built in digital reminder.
Not available in the UK.
Note The novopen5 is not the Echo,
(the echo only dispenses child size doses, the 5 is full size dispenses up to 60 units)

If anyone interested
Finally found a Website distributer in China, Cart100 which was happy to send to the UK.
It has arrived quicker than expected, appears to be the genuine article, and they even chucked in a few freebies including a digital thermometer.
I'm now a happy bunny
The only downside is the instruction book is in Chinese, but then it's a simple enough device to work out how to use without instruction.

Excellent!

How much was it? Does it inject half units?

Including postage 90 US dollars. (About £50)

No, no half units, half units is the Echo.
All the Novopens have 60 clicks which is why the Echo is for children 60 x half units gives a total maximum dose of 30 units.

The Novopen 5 like all the other pens is aimed at adults so a full unit per click, a total maximum dose of 60 units.

The Echo and the Novopen5 look identical are the same physical size and use exactly the same insulin cartridge. The difference is the Echo will only deliver a maximum of 30 units instead of the usual 60 units.

Wow, do you really have to pay for the Novopen 5s? I got the PIP code of the Echo and got a prescription for two of them for my Levemir (1 to use and 1 spare). Sanoffi Aventis were absolute stars when I needed the JuniorStar and none of the medical teams seemed to be able to find them on the system. I rang to ask for the PIP code and they said they could just send me them - so they sent me two for my Apidra. I rang back a week or so later when I started back on insuman basal and they laughed and sent me another two in a different colour.

Mind you, I think I have more insulin delivery pens than a pharmacy at the moment. What with switching insulins and swapping all the full dose for half unit pens, I seem to have cupboards full of them. LOL.

Not sure, the pen has been around since 2012 so I would have thought it would be available on prescription by now.

I have no problem getting things on Perscription that are available in the UK like the Echo.
Getting a Prescription for something that is not released for sale in the UK is a completely different matter.
Yes the novopen5 came out in 2012, would have expected it to be available in UK soon after but it never happened.

I 'am surprised that some people need to inject over 30 units of insulin, even for a heavy carb laden meal I have never gone more than 24 units of NonoRapid, What is the average dose for a T1?

Don't think they'll be an average, it will depend on things like how long they've been diagnosed, weight, exercise, food eaten and whether the person has any insulin resistance I suppose.

I've never injected 30 units in one go or anywhere near that, on average my TDD for bolus injections is around 16-18 units.

I agree with the other posts that needing to inject more than 30 units is very unusual. Can I ask what sort of BMI you have? My daily Basal is 12 and my max Bolus is 11 units, but my weight is only 62Kg

The people who tend to need massive single injections are not T1s but extremely insulin resistant insulin-dependent T2s, often with high body mass, high BMI and a high carb diet.

Personally I think there are better therapeutic responses to people who need 60+ units in a single dose.

On a normal NICE diet, I needed 45u of Lantus as basal in a single shot. My BMI was 25 and I am 6'5", and weighed 97kg at the time.

Changing diet had the biggest impact on reducing levels, combined with weight loss.

How many carbs do you eat in a day? I was advised forty years ago to go for 200gs per day and that is what i'ave aimed for ever since ,but since spending some time on this forum I am thinking I should be aiming lower as this seems quite high compared to other T1s and that was the advise from 40yrs ago, What do others think?
I started off on the same 200g/day when I was diagnosed at 14 (1972). Since coming here a few years ago I dropped down to 150, 120, 100, 80 and then down to 30g per day. You could try reducing to 150 to see how you get on.

I typically eat 30-60g of carbs per day and most of my boluses are to cope with the protein in the meal rather than the carbs. Novorapid on the old regime was typically 10-12u pet meal whereas now it's more like 3-5u.

I eat around 180g of carbs a day, was a bit lower when I first joined the forum but have increased my carbs since then.

30+yrs. pretty much always been 30-60g a day with a fluctuation a few years ago when advised to eat additional toast or porridge for breakfast....only did for a short while.
On a pump and my daily totals are about 18-22 units a day normally..

Blimey dd, you must be tiny. Even at 60g of carbs a day, I'm still managing ~40u per day (but I guess I'm eating about 200g of protein a day which will be skewing that).

Normally eat lower end of the carbs. Used to be on 18 units basal but that has dropped down to just over 12 in recent months for no reason. Playing a game at the moment trying to balance the basal/bolus ratios...still got room to play. Again it can vary according to having a day off from working and from having this cold virus. I've had the pump running this past week at 250%, then 200% no w hopefully back to normal... I'm a muscly 8-10....
Does muscle use less insulin than if I was a fat size 8-10?
