A non diabetic friend told me today that if you consume nuts that it is best to crush them before hand or your body won't absorb the nutrients properly and they will pass straight through the body. I suppose that would be good for fibre though not good for the nutrition. He recommended a nut crusher. Any thoughts?

I usually crush mine up with my teeth as i chew them. Find i tend to choke if i swallow them whole. :-)

Same as Lenny, they are well crushed before swallowing :)

Crushing them with your teeth is an obvious point but I think he recommended that they are crushed to the point they become milled to the size of chia seeds.

But part of the digestion starts with the saliva in your mouth, I'm not too sure about what your friend is saying Bob.

I think you'd know if your body wasn't digesting them. You'd have some very ouchy poo's!

They actually recommend roasting or baking them 1st for best nutrition... But they tell us to eat carbs...so who knows whats best?

Nuts are mostly fat. For example, 28g of walnuts contain 18g of fat and only 4 g carbs, 2 of which are dietary carbs which you don't digest anyway.

Have you ever tried swallowing a walnut whole? I can't even get them out of the shell without breaking them into little pieces.

This reminds me of a politically incorrect joke regarding crushed nuts that I won't repeat here. Anyway, your friend sounds nuts. Just chew a bit more if you're worried about that. Or eat more of them.

A coffee grinder will chomp up nuts for you if your teeth aren't up to the job. :D:D
