People, who do not stick by you in good times and bad.
Hi guys, I have just been given the next blood test results. After getting my HbA1c from 59 to 46 in three months,
I loved the LCHF diet it really suited me, I lost a stone and a half in weight and felt lots better
My skin healed a lot faster I still seemed to go to the toilet a lot but that was due to the amount of water I drank. My tiredness was gone and i felt in controll of my diabetes. I had made a life change. I spoke to a few people on here and got some good advice.
However I spoke to a very good doctor, who a few people will know, a doctor Yung, he told me my cholesterol was way to high and a small rise was usually what happened on the LCHF diet. He said I could be eating to much protein or that I needed to fast a few days a week.
If you watch his site on YouTube you will see what he says makes total sense.
I have decided to add a small amount of carbs to my diet as I was fasting and sticking to the Diet Dr's recipes. So i have just got my results back from my doctors just for my cholesterol it was 5.6 before I started the diet and 3 months later it was up at 10.7 and with the small amount of carbs added in about 3 weeks it has come down to 6.1, my glucose readings have risen to still a good figure of 7 however when I started the carbohydrates it went way up to 14-16 and seems to of settled down again.
I saw in a post from the Diet Dr's site today, that said 1 or 2 percent of the population due to genetics will have bad cholesterol on the LCHF, does anybody have this problem?
I feel I was very good on the diet but I got a bit frightened with my high cholesterol reading. Thanks.

I found my cholesterol climbed for the first 6 months and for the last 6 months it has been slowly coming down and although it is still sitting at 5.6 the nurse is happy as the breakdown is good. I used to eat a lot more protein than I do now so I dont know if cutting back made a difference

Not all cholesterol is bad .. Do you have the breakdown numbers for your total cholesterol?

Thanks 4ratbags.
I am in the process of cutting back now and also adding a small amount of carbs maybe I went in at the start to fixed on cutting out all my carbs out so im just adding a few back in and cutting out some protein and seeing what that does. I just don't want the cholesterol getting to high as I don't want put on statins. My doctor is great but confused by the readings or was and now says he wants to wait another 3 months for further blood tests, i had a fatty liver and the readings have stabilised for that also, so I'm happy about that.

Thanks Enclave, that's two blood tests where the hospital have not given the good and bad cholesterol readings. I was not to happy about that and when I asked the doc he said that they sometimes do that. Not to sure what that's all about but I've said can he make sure I get the good and bad readings as I'm trying to take notes on everything. thanks

My understanding is that most research indicates that a low-carb diet is good for cholesterol in the long term, and therefore good for the heart. There are of course exceptions and genes play a big part in cholesterol too, but on the whole a low carb diet is unlikely to cause big problems of this kind. Maybe there are other factors at work. Also - maybe I'm wrong! well possible.

When you say you are letting a small amount of carbs back into your diet ... Was you not eating any vegetables ? The more low carb veg you eat the more plant steroids you will get ..so lots of leafly veg are good in general .. The plant steroids help clear the bad cholesterol. I have 20 to 30g of carbs a day .. I am vegetarian so don't have the problem of to much protein in my diet, and my cholesterol has risen slightly .. But not to bad ..I do have heart failure so need to watch the cholesterol levels .. I have be able to stop taking the statin since I went low carb ... Hope this helps

Hi Enclave, i was eating only veg grown above ground, so no onions, carrot etc etc but plenty of cabbage Brockley tomato etc etc my plate was 3/4 full of these types of veg and my plate size was a small plate if I snack it is a handful of nuts or some berry's but I was feeling full more often than not so that was very seldom. I do have spine problems and I am getting nerve block injections so im.wondering if it's the lack of exercise? I have lost the weight but I'm only 15 stone now was over 16 when I started I'm 5'9" but the exercise is something that I find kills me after, I'm up all night with pain and sore as hell after but I do try and walk as far as I can before it starts getting to much and swim at least twice a week.
I glad to hear about the statins and that your off them and the cholesterol is being looked after. Look after that heart Enclave I just wish it was like the liver and repaired itself
It was such a huge jump in the cholesterol that it scared the hell out me, this site is great as I come here and get so many different things that may be causing the problem and still being rather new to being diabetic I'm still in that early "go get em stage" lol however I do realise that this is not a quick fix and because of the people in this site it keeps my determination strong. I have had all great answers to all my questions that seem silly to ask but if you don't know, it's not being silly and Dr Yung who I have had a bit if contact with did not have to talk to me at all, however he was really kind and i read his blog all the time as I said what he says makes total sense and I'm totaly confused why the NHS and other medical people keep pushing this low fat idea around, well that's my opinion for what it's worth. Lol haha take care.

Hope you find your way through the high cholesterol .. was it a fasting test ? only my Dr won't do a fasting blood test for me since I have become T2 .. and she says thats why I am showing a small increase in cholesterol compared to my fasting results !

Yes it was a fasting test and I'm type 2 as well. Why does she not do a fasting test on you? What was your fasting results and what was the non fasting results.
What's the difference between the fasting and non, apart from the obvious. Haha what one should you go with?

yep, I had this problem and that's why I stopped the LCHF. I have a family history of high cholesterol and heart disease... so not worth it for me. I get much better results with higher carb intake. Now I'm on insulin I find I need to anyhow as I can hypo without the right carbs. The LCHF is great for some, but not all. I'm a firm believer that you have to do what works for you... just because something works for someone else doesn't mean it will definitely work for you. Although always good to give things a try. :) Plus being honest I felt disgusting on the LCHF diet... I did it for over a year and then stopped.

I was 4,0 fasting and resent no fasting test was 4.6 but the rise is from good cholesterol. I don't eat a lot of fats so that could be why the rise is not to high for me.

I've been on a low carb diet for the last 6 years. My cholesterol went up to about 9 mmol/l at one point but came down on tests over a period of years -notably in the last 2 years. At my last test, the total cholesterol was 5.6 mmol/l I think.

I've personally not been concerned as my HDL/Total ratio has always been very good, so I warded off the attempts to have me 'consider' statins.

Triglycerides have always been relatively low and consistent so that shouldn't have influenced the change to a significant degree.

What prompted the total cholesterol level to come down? I really don't know. I ate pretty much the same diet and my exercise wasn't that much different over those years.

I'm left thinking, maybe some people's bodies take time to adjust but I'm just clutching at straws here.

I've had high cholesterol for the last 7 or so years. My doctor called me up at work, told me the bad news and said, well, at least your good cholesterol levels are good, but go low-fat, ok? So I went low-fat , or lower fat in those days, which meant high carb, and then not only did my cholesterol level get worse, the 'good cholesterol' level went down (which is even worse). What's the story? I thought. And said as much to my doc. She didn't know. Then a few years on, and I became diabetic. I hit a big bad blood-lipids low. Then going paleo, and now LCHF (paleo with cream and cheese basically), my trigylceride readings have been good. Between .9 and 1.6. 'Good cholesterol' levels back to being good. But the cholesterol is still high. Same as my father's. As he's 82, and in way better health than me, I'm kind of not really worried about my cholesterol levels with regards to strokes. I figure I have bigger health issues to worry about. (I am more convinced a high carb level would ****** up my arteries.) (yeah - I read 'the cholesterol myth' and other various things.) I do think that high fat as well as high carb is very dangerous for heart health. But, with regards to me being HF in the LC thing, watch this space? If I come back after a spell away and tell y'all I had a stroke - well. I guess I would have been wrong. ;) :).
