Hi,

I'm a 32 year old, male, 5'6, slim, 10ish stone.

Been lethargic and losing memory function for about 4 years. Seems to have coincided with eating a mostly vegan diet.

For years my diet has been mostly white rice, large variety of vegetables, soy and sesame oil and the odd bit of chicken and beef. And chocolate a few times a week.

I've been waking up for the last few years a few times a week with what I now believe to be hypo symptoms. (I've been stumped for years). Although after BG tests I think they're psydo hypos.

Here are my blood glucose tests I've done so far since switching to low carb, high fat diet.

Morning 12 hour fast - 7.3 (major hypo symptoms/panick attack)

30 mins after eating - 6.0
(Eggs and butter)

Morning fast - 6.1
Morning fast - 6.8

Here's where it gets interesting

Breakfast 15 mins after - 5.0 (felt overwhelmingly tired and had to lie down)
(Eggs, butter, cabbage, 1/4 avocado)
1 hour after lieing down - 6.7

I haven't been diagnosed or been to the doctors about this in a few years. I'm just trying to work out what this morning feeling is (and why I'm always tired). I always thought it was a food intolerance, hence restricted diet. But something led me to check my blood glucose levels and they seem high?

Any thoughts?

Can you tell us exactly what else you eat - for lunch and evening meal?

Those levels you have posted are nowhere near hypo. (under 4 is hypo)

One of the levels you quote is higher than desirable (7.3) but not at all unusual. Morning fasting levels are notoriously unreliable as so many factors are involved. (Dawn Phenomenon, overactive hormones, stress, poor sleep, illness and others)

I am suspicious that you are not getting all the essential vitamins and minerals we need. It is very tricky on a (mostly) vegan diet and supplements are recommended.

I suggest you pay your GP a visit as soon as possible. Tell him your symptoms and ask for a full set of blood tests including vitamins and minerals, iron and ferritin, full blood count, kidney & liver functions, and HbA1c (3 month blood glucose average)

Hi, thanks for the reply, yea as I said I think they're pysdo hypos after I've cut out the carbs and sugar the last week.

Just did my blood again 2 hours after that last meal and I'm 8.8

My new diet is much in line with the bulletproof program if you've heard of it?

So coffee with butter and coconut oil in the morning.

Then for lunch been having eggs, butter, olive oil, avocado, and some dark greens

Then for dinner, grass fed beef, mixture of greens, 50g white rice, avocado, olive oil.

Salt with everything. Lots of water as I've been feeling head pressure and been advised to after changing to high fat diet.

I haven't been diagnosed or been to the doctors about this in a few years.

So you haven't actually been diagnosed with pre diabetes?

It is possible to have false hypos at euglycaemic levels if you have been running high for a while. But I wouldn't expect someone to have a false hypo at 7.3 unless they had been running seriously high for quite a while. That would make diabetic more likely than pre diabetic.

Also, a panic attack and a hypo are different. You might want to check out hypo symptoms. Whatever it is your experiencing doesn't seem to be anything to do with your blood sugar.

Your blood sugar levels all look normal. If you're concerned about diabetes, see your GP for a hba1c test.

No this is all completely me self diagnosing. So I'm fully aware I could be totally wrong about everything. But everytime I check my BG and check the chart it's always been in the "potentially diabetic" area. I appreciate this could also be in the wrong forum section

And yes I've looked up the hypo symptoms and that's exactly what I feel (and when I feel them I believe it freaks me out and so then I get a whole load of other self created symptoms because I'm freaking out) but yeah checking my blood shows its not a real hypo (actually much higher than a normal level) which lead me to finding the pysdo hypo and yeah you might be right, perhaps I've been high for a long time.

Things are getting much worse with these false hypo feelings because I've cut down to around 50g of carbs a day on a keto inspired diet of high fats. Every time I eat now I'm getting these horrible hypo symptoms.

But yeah I'm going to book an appointment with my doctor tomorrow and get from real checks done.

Carbs from white rice are just as empty of nutrients as the same amount of sugar or another grain.
I would really urge you to eat a wider variety of foods - things which are different colours, botanically different families and parts of the plant so as to get different vitamins and minerals.
There is nothing magic about eating just a few carbs for a meal - you need to think about the quality of nutrition you are getting.

Absolutely Resurgam, I've always been unmotivated by food and so just thought a load of veg and some carbs would suffice. But I'm now taking it all very seriously and spending a fortune on food :D but yeah I've basically had no fat in my life for many years which is where I think my problems have come from (tiredness and loss of brain function).

But yeah, I'm now just concerned about these BG levels

Please see a physician. Yes, get a hemoglobin A1C, but also get a metabolic panel to rule out an electrolyte imbalance, a CBC to rule out anemia or a long term low grade infection. Any of these things can make you feel weak with fuzzy thinking. It could be something simply treated, but without the tests you are just blindly trying things and, as you said, spending a fortune on food.

During her low fat Vegan phase, my daughter became very weak and pale. Yes, she was taking whole food multivitamins. When she finally agreed to go for a check up, just to ease my fears, it turned out she was severely anemic. Didn’t stop the Vegan phase, but she did get appropriate supplements.
