Hi I hope some one can help me, I cant seem to get my sugar levels under control. My doctor phoned me today to tell me my blood glucose was 20.1 it was taken in the morning after I had breakfast (a coffee and a bowl of shreaded wheat_) no sugar. I am on gliclizide at the moment the dose has just been doubled to 160mg I am strict with my diet not eating any refined sugars. I dont know what else to do to bring them down. the pills dont seem to be making any difference. last hbac1 test was 9.3. I tried low carb diet for a while and it made no difference.

all i can say is that although on the box it says that there is very little sugar it does have a very high gi.maybe you could try different breakfasts like eggs or weetabix but i would definately go back to the gp ,dermot

hya,
you really need to see your health care provider again and tell them you need more help with lowering your bloods, a lot of type 2,s cannot eat starches e.g cereal, bread, potatoes etc, how low carb did u go??
one of our type 2s should be along soon to help u more :)

Hi, I seem to be totally carb intolerant. If I eat any form of cereal for breakfast my BS levels go up to about 11.
Today for example, I had cheese and an apple for breakfast, yogurt midmorning, home-made Turkey curry with a little cous-cous and a chicken and salad wrap for tea...that kept my BS level at about 5 all day. I class this as quite an extreme carb-cutting exercise but it's what I have to do to keep my levels low.
I started off with a fasting level of 18 and it has taken me from January to now to get it down to what I would class a normal level. I also take 3 metformin a day.
Good luck with it and you have to do what you feel is right. If you want to try lowering the carbs again you have to give it time. As I say it has taken me a few months and the decline was gradual.

hi i seem to be the same first thing in morning any form of cereal pushes sugars up to 11 12 the same as above postthe only thing i can say to you from my own experience so far was on diamicron when was first placed on tabs back in january and found theese had little effect changed to meterformin sr and theese as well as skipping cereal and trying to find alternatives have brought bs down to acceptable levels at the moment again same as above post you have to be paitent it did take six week for them to even come down to acceptable levels

yes agree without trying to derail the thread and sound like i am bragin which am not this has been my thinking since started tabs and have decreased meds enormously if this can be acheaved then great people are always saying thoe go on have some chips etc and it does take a lot of will power to say no

I have got so used to NOT having the high carb treats that I'm not very tempted any more, but If I am then I can now have (1) and only (1).
The treasts are less of a problem than carbs hidden in food. If I go to my Mum's for a meal, I have to be on the look out, because, although she has T2 herself, she doesn't take me seriously and tells me that it won't hurt me. She believes the doctors and when I say I don't she tells me that I can't know as much as they do. She'a 91 and not going to change. If I live as long, perhaps I won't worry about what I eat either.

thank you to everyone who replied. I will take any help I can get, just now I feel like a total failure. Have to go back to the doctor in 6 weeks to get the bloods done again I will try something other than cerial and see if that helps. I tried the low carb cutting out potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, and cerial before but my hbac1 test came back 9,6. I will have another go.

Hi
I cannot eat shredded wheat, It shoots my blood sugars through the roof if i eat any sort of breakfast ceral!
I don't eat bread, rice, potato, pasta! I can't have tinned beans or tomato's as they put my blood sugars through the roof!
I know that i have gone very low carb!
My breakfast is one egg, 1 slice of bacon, 1 sausage,
For lunch I will have some sort of salad maybe with half a apple and a bit of cheese!
Evening meal maybe tuna salad or meat with salad!
I sometimes have snacks during the day if needs be some macadania nuts with a little bit of cheese!
it sounds like your body cannot tolerate carbs!
Why don't you try a three day test to begin with! Sometimes it works very well! Just see how your body goes!
You are not a failure! You are in need of help and that is what this forum was set up for! Offering help and support to those people who need it!
My Hbac1 was 9.8 when diagnoised my blood test a couple of weeks ago came back at 6.8!
You can do it! You just some help and support just give it a go!
Sandy

Hello D,
As a confectioner, you are at risk of tasting the mixes or licking your fingers, though in these days of H&S & rubber gloves, that may protect your tongue

I note from your profile:
Exercise: work 50 -60 hours a week at the moment no time
That should be adequate for sugar control

Diet: have been told to eat carbs at every meal
So are we all, & most of us were obedient, thinking Drs & dietitians knew best. THEY DON'T :!: They also tell us that our diabetes will progress, & that every increasing medication will be the answer. The experience of many on this forum is that carb reduction is the key to good control. I followed that advice until complications set in. (Disabling leg muscle pains.) A year ago I reduced carb & my health was restored. My HbA1c has not changed much, but my health certainly has.

[Some on this forum are vehement in their defence of carbs, but we've all been there. In the early days of diabetes, I would have sided with them.]

I don't need carbs for energy - I still play a good game of tennis at club standard. I used to be very sleepy, needing to stop every hour when driving. Reduced carb has improved that condition.

Likes: food unfortunately, friends, family and movies when I get time
I enjoy my food, & never feel deprived by eating ample veg, cheese, meat, fish, fruit & only incidental carb.

We cannot diagnose, but as you have tried reduced carb, & respond quickly to carbs, your medication may not be adequate. I suggest you eliminate obvious carbs from your diet for a month, supplementing with cold meats, nuts, cheese, etc & the occasional fruit. Do a blood test at least every morning, & 2 hours after meals.

Hope that helps. Report back for further advice/comments.

that's a doctor's trick
If their advice doesn't work, you can't be sticking to it. Keep a food diary for a week and take it with you. He might suggest you're faking it, but then again, he might listen

thanks forn the advice. My doctor thinks I'm getting a sugar hit just by being at work and breathing in the icing sugar. We never do the finger licking for hygine reasons. the food diary sounds like a great idea and the testing. my doctor doesn't think I need to test but with blood sugars of 20.1 I think I need to do something and not just go along with every thing she says.

Hi there dk 12. I'm in much the same position as you. My readings were regularly in the 20's up untill a couple of days ago. Due to carb restriction and testing I'm starting to make progress, (last test 14.3, still too high but going in the right direction!) In my case it appears to be store brand weetabix type cereal. Everyones different. Try replacing one food at a time and see what happens. Let us know how you get on.

Baby steps, that's the way as people above have said. You will get there and find something that works for you. My endo has just told me that I am controlling my diabetes too well...I took that as a compliment :D

If you breathed in enough icing sugar to put your bg up, your lungs would be full of frosting and you'd have been asphyxiated. That Bg is coming from somewhere else.
