Hi I’ve been diagnosed this week and my Hba1c 126 - they said it’s sky high and want to run more tests to see if I’m 2 or 1
They’ve started me on metformin 500mg three times a day. I’m obviously sorting my diet out which did consist of a fair amount of carbs - any advice would be appreciated .. thanks Paul

Get a glucose meter, test your fasting glucose first thing and then before and 2hrs after eating to see if the food is spiking your blood sugars. Look for less than a 2 mmol rise after 2 hours.

Good morning, @Paulcambs ,

I know, it's scary... And right now it feels like you've lost grip on just about everything. It's a good thing you're being checked for type, as most of us are just guessed. Tests are expensive and many adults just get a T2 label until it turns out it was a misdiagnosis and a different type applies. Might as well get that bit out of the way right now, and know what you're up against.

So for the moment, it's mainly a waiting game. @Art Of Flowers is right though, you could just get started on lowering your carb intake, that shouldn't affect the results of the typing tests. https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html is geared to T2's and prediabetics, but for as long as you're on nothing other than metformin, low carbing should get your blood sugars down some, without risk of hypo's. If you're a Type 1, or a variant thereof, it's a whole different ballgame and you'll get help with insulin and all that. But that's for later. For now: Diabetes is often quite manageable. It's a steep learning curve, but it's not the doom and gloom it used to be, especially when you're doing research and educating yourself on treatment. With the NHS it's a bit of a mixed bag, it seems, as some diabetes nurses and specialists are quite up-to-date on low carb diets as a treatment, others still push the EatWell plate, which isn't very good for us... So while you're waiting in limbo for a T1 or T2 verdict, just read up, start testing around your meals, and learn what your body responds well to, and not so well. (Indeed, test before a meal and 2 hours after the first bite, with no more and preferably less than a 2.0 mmol/l rise between those numbers).

You're going to be fine. Doesn't feel like it right now, but... With a HbA1c of 126, I'm fairly sure you were feeling worn down all the time, possibly moodswingy, maybe other symptoms like yeast infections, wounds that don't heal...? Up all hours of the night to pee? Now you know what the problem is, and you're about to do something to remedy it, well... Odds are you're going to feel a whole lot better before winter comes.

It's scary, but you're just embarking on a journey to better health and quality/quantity of life. Hang in there, and have some hope.
Hugs,
Jo

Hi @Paulcambs welcome to the forum.
Your HbAc1 is high, but the positives are you now know that your blood sugars are too high and you can begin to bring those blood sugars down. Your health care team will now be looking to see what is causing your high blood sugars. The Metformin will help to lower your blood sugars, but they will want to confirm what type you are. Likely they will be looking to see how much insulin your pancreas is producing. They will do this by doing a C-peptide test. If your C-peptides are low, given your high blood sugars, they will then likely test to see if you are producing antibodies. If antibodies, such as GAD are confirmed, you will get a diagnosis of type 1 (autoimmune diabetes)and your med team will proscribe appropriate meds, very likely insulin. If your C-peptides are high then a Type 2 diagnosis will be the result.

Until you know what type of diabetes you have, you might wish to lower your carb intake a bit, but not too much until you know what type you are. You can cut back on anything that has high carbs , such as potatoes, chips, pasta, etc. If you are found to be Type 2 then your med team will may suggest a change of diet/lifestyle as a means of bringing down those blood sugars. You may then wish to cut your carbs right back. This has proved to be very successful for a lot of Type 2 members here. If you are found to be Type 1 then some carb reduction may help, but your main means of lowering your blood sugars will be through insulin therapy. Your diabetes team will be able to help with dosing.

Regardless of what type of diabetes you have, you will find a great community here , both for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Members here will be happy to advise you with any questions you may have, so feel free to ask. There are forums here for both types of diabetes so please feel free to ask questions.

That is a high number! Glad they're looking at the type you have. You can get that down significantly and quite quickly with low carb if it's T2. If T1 you'll obviously have different meds to help with this.
Jo's nutritional thingy is a brilliant place to start.

Thanks everyone for your replies, quick question, so im since starting the metformin ive felt amazing, loads of energy wake up refreshed and the mental fog has gone. They are testing me Monday for type 1, but given that I am eeling so good would I be like this if I am type 1, surely I would be still feeling rubbish due to lack of insilin etc, Or is it more complicated than that. I know I will find out soon one way or the other but its worrying me

Great and very promising that you are feeling better. I'm not going to comment on whether you could be T1 (you really need the tests and forum rules don't allow us to diagnose). Have you been given a meter to test your blood sugars?

Hi I used to be on the rollercoaster with bs climbing, try adding Ceylon cinnamon. I used to be super high, borderline needing insulin. Twice daily 2x 1200mg capsules.
