I take Byetta and metformin for diabetes. I have nerve damage in my back which sometimes gives me severe pain, cannot take ibuprofen any more because of kidney problems but wonder how does Byetta react to paracetamol or stronger painkillers. I have taken paracetamol over past couple of days and feel really ill so is this a result of the combination or coincidence. Can anyone help ???

if you are feeling really ill then you should contact NHS direct they will be able to advise you if you need to see an out of hours gp or go to hospital or if you can wait and make a routine appointment with your gp.
you should consult your doctor or pharmacist to see if paracetamol is safe to take with byetta, sorry I cant be anymore help but I have no expereince of byetta and I not medically trained.
I hope you feel better soon

All Reff from BNF61
Cautions Paracetamol
alcohol dependence; max. daily infusion dose 3 g in patients with hepatocellular insufficiency, chronic alcoholism, chronic malnutrition, or dehydration; interactions: Appendix 1 ("paracetamol")

Hepatic impairment
dose-related toxicity—avoid large doses; see also Cautions

Renal impairment
increase infusion dose interval to every 6 hours if eGFR less than 30 mL/minute/1.73 m2; note also sodium content of effervescent tablets (see under relevant preparation entry)

Side-effects
side-effects rare, but rashes, blood disorders (including thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, neutropenia) reported; hypotension, flushing, and tachycardia also reported on infusion; important: liver damage (and less

Byetta
Side-effects

Main interaction i could see in BNF61 with Byetta with other drugs was hypoglycaemic effect
Did not see any interaction Byetta with Paracetamol :?

BNF61 look for yourself British National Formulary

I Do NOT Use Byetta
I do partake in loads of other full on pain control medication 24/7

I would Pop and see your GP HCP

If you have this back pain Non stop ask for some help with it also ask to see pain team

Thank you all, I have very long term nerve damage in my back which cannot be improved and painkillers are the only course of remedy when things get really out of hand. Guess it is just "put up with it" time.

I have found personally that duloxitine is the drug for me....I have fibromyalgia which although different causations is appropriate for diabetic neurapopathy as well....I used to tak so many anti-inflammatories and painkillers I should be dead to be quite honest.....this 60mg duloxitine tablet for me has worked wonders for pain and brain...only thing is I have to take it in a split dose..nut fibro...is also nerve nedings....and wonder whether you or your GP has evered considered it......unless it is really bad now,,, I can avoid all painkillers..the only time when I have to resort to them is if I get a spate of TMJ in my face or a big fl;are up...aprart from that I can now avoid all painkillers until the bad times.....

Hi Mo, I suffer with degenerative arthritis which manifests itself in acute pain in my right leg, the pain can be anywhere but is usually in the inner thigh and foot/toes area, but as I said it does move from place to place.

Ask your GP to refer you to the pain clinic, I believe every area has one, there will suggest and offer drugs that may help you based on the conditions that you have and the meds you are already taking. I have to say that after 9 or 10 months they failed miserably to find anything that worked for me, they tried various drugs and the only one that worked well, actually worked too well and caused erectile dysfunction probably due to the fact that it killed all feeling below the waist  I think it was Gabapintin but it could also have been Pregabalin as I tried both amoungst other drugs, I now take either ibuprofin during the day, cant take it at night due to asthma, paracetamol, co codamol 50/500 or DF118 Codiene 40mg. Unfortunately the co codamol and the DF118 do work but they also cause bad constipation so I try to avoid them unless the pain is really bad.

I do find the Boots hot/cold Compress gel packs help when applied to the lower back after standing in boiling water for 10 minutes, thats the pads standing in boiling water not me BTW :D Unlike the use once and throw away gel heat packs the Boots ones are re usable which makes them cheaper especially when you are using them 6 times a day

Yep, pain management clinics are good...although there can be a waiting list for them on NHS...in our area it is about a year!!!! Well worth going to though...if money was no problem or with any insurance a private consultation may be worth consideringto ask GP for....

I would deff ask to see pain consultant then
Mine are Brill :D I See them on a regular basis i can phone any time

I'm seeing the physio and GP (again) on Tuesday.

For 3 weeks I have had something that may be sciatica or may be lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the nerve canal at the base of the spine) which has the effect of severe pain in the muscle on the outside top of my right thigh, sometimes going down to my knee and shin, said muscle spasms when I walk, which I believe is called intermittent claudication?

At the moment I'm taking one Volsaid Retard 75 twice a day, 2 Tramadol 50 4 times a day, 2 paracetamol 500 4 times a day. These mask it a bit, but don't stop it. I can't sit, can't stand, can't lie down. The only way I can walk without pain is by bending forward (and swinging my knuckles! ). This posture makes me think it's coming from my lower back (where I have had pain for nearly 20 years) rather than the leg or hip joint. X-ray shows only "normal" osteoarthritis in my hips and lower spine.

Can someone please tell me more about the stenosis etc, if they know? or at least reassure me that I won't be in this state for the rest of my life?

I feel very OLD at the moment  .

If your lucky it will settle with rest and ant-inflammatory
HCP will alway try conservative treatment first with your back

Stenosis
Sometimes you may need an operation

Seems a long way around but you need to see a Osto consultant then a MRI
who then sends you onto a Neuro surgeon in my area only a
Neuro surgeon can operate on your back only then if he think s odds are with you

If not may send you off to pain clinic and try spinal injections

Problems with water works and lower back pain is a Red Flag event go to GP ASAP
Cauda equina syndrome its rare, but an emergency

Try sleeping on your side with your knees bent up into the fetal position hot water bottle on your back

Feel for you

Lucky to only have Arthritis Gout TIA with T2...

Hi Bob, I have a mate who has bad gout, amongst other things and is allergic to gout medications but it has been suggested that he starts on a (relatively) new gout Bio drug, he was saying to me last week that first he has to take a short course of steroids for some reason or other and will then start the bio drug and that he hopes it will give him some relief.

I will be seeing him tomorrow and will ask him some more details about it and report back to you here or by PM if I lose this thread

Lucky i have not had a gout attack for 6 months now and with the L4-l5 brake the pain does not reach the brain :D The damage is still done to the foot from attack , I do have a lot of ghost pain in legs feet feelings sopping wet im siting on the settee ?
I take Allopurinol for Gout seems to work for me but always interested in anything new

Thanks Sid

Thanks, Bob.

It doesn't matter how I sleep (believe me I've tried everything!), it still hurts.

I believe it's 'neurogenic claudication', by the way, not intermittent.

Water works seem fine!

One good thing - I'm not eating much, and have lost 6lb in a week!
