Hi all hope you can help me. We are moving to UK this summer. I was wondering what the care is like for diabetics my son is 12 and type 1. We are in Ireland, here everything including counselling is provided for free by our health system. We receives great care here , I am worried about his care in Uk. Please advise thank you

Healthcare free, but can be a bit of a post code lottery....have you a rough idea where you will be living?

Wales look after their own health matters, rather than the UK government...I thinkScotland is pretty much the same....England normal healthy people have to pay for the prescriptions-they don't in Wales.....hospital carparks in the main are now free in Wales, but not in England....

Maybe ask this question in the Youth section. I can't help as I'm in Australia and only needles are free (because drug addicts get them) and we pay something for everything else. How much depends on what subsidy's are available and income.

Hi Scoughlan, and welcome.

I'm Type 2 and don't have children, but I'm pretty sure your son's treatment will be completely free. Adult diabetics on medication get free prescriptions so he will (do kids pay for any prescriptions, anyone?), his test strips will be on prescription for a Type 1 (Type 2s sometimes have problems), and I'm sure he'll get everything else free.

Unfortunately care levels vary across the country for things like availability of counselling. My brother and his wife live near-ish to WIndsor, and I've never heard them complain. Their adult daughter has MS, and gets good care.

Hi

You need to register with your GP initally and ask for a referral to a consultant. Our GP's services do vary enormously....mine offer acupuncture, counselling, stress management courses free of charge...I live in Wales. Unfortunately services here are a postcode lottery, and I really don't know how your area is with it's services.....

Pretty much everything is free for diabetic type 1's, however funding for things such as pumps, again is a huge lottery postcode depending on hospitals consultants, nurses and PCT''s as well.

I love wehre i live as the service is absolutely superb, but having read so many posts by others on the website, I know there are a lot of people that do not get the fortune that I do.

Best thing to do is to ask locally to find out the best GP and try and register with that practice. Try to find out the best hospital for that area....there is research available on the websites.... and get a referral asap to a diabetic consultant and health team and explain what you had before. You may find that with funding here that GP''s try to limit blood test strips even on type 1's...however a consultant and dsn from hospital can over-ride the gp's by writing to them and instructing what medicines you need and must have.....
