Parkrun

@borofergie oh yes i hit it! fuelling was a disater and so were my tactics, firstly it was my wedding anniverysary saturday so i figured kill two birds with one stone and we had a takeaway pizza, i was thinking ill tke some carbs in, which may well be why i hit the wall at 15 miles and never went through it, i also ate 2 gels, christ knows what was in them but i was desperately trying to stay alive to the end, i also set off wayyyy to quickly, completely the opposite to everyones advice, so i dont know if i struggled because of the fast start, the pizza, not enough training, or what, i didnt prove anything to myself about low carbing and running unfortunatly, i will always regret that **** pizza lol but heyho i still got my medal

That must have taken an extrordinary amount of determination to get to the finish when you were struggling with so many miles to go. Well done!
I don't know what @borofergie thinks, but I would say it's more likely to have been your early pace that killed you rather than the pizza - but see what the oracle has to say.
You're an absolute star, and I wish you a speedy recovery (oh and a happy belated anniversary!)

I'm not an oracle, I'm more of a Monday Morning Quarterback, talking a good game without having run a marathon myself yet.

Yes. I learned a lot on Saturday as some of my parkrun friends - all of them much better than me - were completely humbled by the time they passed me at the 25 mile point. Looking at their splits, the ones that suffered too much were the ones that started out too fast and then "hit the wall" after 30km. The performance (and the most genuinely surprising result) came from one of our parkrun friends who knocked 20 mins off her PB to score a 3:50. She started out slow and negative splitted (splat?).

The more I think about it, part of the trick with Marathon training is finding your marathon pace and sticking with it, no matter how long it takes. If you burn too much glycogen in the early stages, you'll never get it back in the second half.

At my very best I'm a sub 28min parkrunner. I saw lots of the 23 and 24min guys struggling through in 04:30. I think I should probably forget about sub 5.

No mate. You earned it. For all the talk of low-carb marathons, I bet I end up gobbling some gels too on the day.

It's also easy to say "don't go too fast at the start", but almost everyone does on the day. It took me 70 odd parkruns to work out that running flat out ont the first lap wasn't the best tactic.

How are your legs?
 
agony, ive sat around all day, any movement is painful and forget the stairs, i just struggled to asda to try and loosen up, i look like charlie chaplin when i walk lol, i have a huge blister on the side of my second toe that unlike a blister is deep red rather than white, hoping im better tommorow, it feels like having the flu when you ache all over, thinking about it, when i did the 20 mile race i was much better at 20 miles than yesterday, and i did that slower at the start, i suppose there is a good reason everyone says start slow, i could kick myself but it would hurt lol

I don't think it's the fueling so much. Going of too fast is the biggie for me. My fastest one (ok 30 years ago) I wasn't going much above walking pace for the first 4 miles. No fuel just water. People just didn't fuel on the way round then. I was also a lot fitter running everywhere. Not always long runs but over a week quite a lot of miles. A few miles to work then swimming at lunchtime. Run home. Then twice a week running with the club and most weekends a short race 10k or so. Then I would run to friends houses, run to the pub.


I think miles in your legs is a biggie
