I did have another account as 'endocrinegremlin' but no matter how many times I assure the site of my email and passwords and offer them other emails and passwords they won't want to know!

I'm a type one but I am asking for a friend. My friend lives in Perth (scotland)and struggles with hypoglycemia episodes. He is wondering what the situation is for type twos in the area in regards to testing strips. Are they free? Is there a limit? If you have to pay for yourself is there a meter strip combo that is cheaper?

Do you have any advice for helping him gain more support?

I don't know about living in Oz!

But we now have a reactive hypoglycaemia forum now if he wants to have a look.

Welcome back in whatever guise you are in!

He's in Perth Scotland! Though i will encourage him to join and have a look. He is wary without an official diagnosis.

Is your friend on insulin treatment?

if he is then he should be prescribed test strips just as you are as a T1 as the "type" doesnt matter, if he is on insulin then he must test his bg levels.

No, at the moment he is just having hypos, The meter he has he got off a friend and he is buying his strips. It is a horrific situation,

The cheapest way to self fund testing strips is the SD codefree. 50 strips are about £7, and the meter is about £14.

They are available from eBay or Amazon or the manufacturer, and while they are not the top of the range meter, they are very useful and I wouldn't want to be without one.

If your friend wanted to test 6 x a day, it would probably cost 84p a day.

Oops!

Doh!

Tell him to at least have a look!

They keep changing the rules on getting meters and strips, but I believe it's up to the GPs themselves, but usually it's about wether T2s or other types, not RH though, are likely to be on blood glucose reducing meds or insulin. It's complicated due to funding etc.
Bloody Tories!
It's different in Scotland, Wales, Ulster and England!
