Yesterday I attended the first week of this xpert course, so thought i would share my experience with everyone here.
This was the first time this course was held in my home county of Fife in Scotland, and it was held at a brand spanking new community hospital in St Andrews. So the NHS was keen to get it right to keep funding for it.
10am start... parking was a bit of a ****** though.
There were two educators, both ladies, one was the diabetic dietitian (name removed) and (name removed) not sure what her title is, but will find out next week.
We were a small group of, 2 gents, 4 ladies and one husband brought by one lady for support.
After general intros of each other the professionals set to work following the format laid out for them, being the first time for them too they were alittle unfamiliar with the props but coped well with giving us the info on what diabetes is and how it is linked to other conditions eg blood pressure, liver ,kidney problems. also foot care and why! we all asked questions as they came to mind and i felt most of us had the same concerns. things like explaining medication, what test results mean, weight problems and activity. Out of the 6 of us only 2 tested our own bg with meters at home! I know i was shocked by this too. I anticipate by the end of 6weeks we all will have meters.... as so many of them have little confidence in managing their bg levels at the moment. And as much as i felt my gp wasn't very informed about diabetes, I was the only one with a complete copy of blood test results for the previous twelve months, which came in handy when the educators were explaining HBA1C test results.
But most of all it was great to be part of a group that had so much in common. I think by the end of the 6 weeks we will be like old friends able to support each other without feeling like idiots for asking what to some may be stupid questions.
Next week... weight management, that'll be good for a laugh after looking at the book they gave us to study about the course. In general I feel everyone enjoyed the morning even though one lady did say to me during a comfort break that she didn't think it was the right course for her personally... she really only wanted to be given a menu of food she could eat and recipes safe for diabetics!
Saying that when we went back in and were all discussing the importance of hba1c tests and knowing our resultsshe did seem as if she wanted to find out more about her own results and the educator assured us all they were there to give us confidence to question gp/practice nurses who did not explain issues properly.
To say some of the others have been T2 for many years I felt more informed than all of them, thanks mostly to all my forumites HERE!!! Thank you. :) Will update from week to week but would throughly recommend this course to all, not just diabetics!

Re: My experience of week one "Xpert Patient Course"

Glad you enjoyed it....and I was shocked when I went on a similar course atthe difference in peoples knowledge.

Re: My experience of week one "Xpert Patient Course"

Thanks for your report on the Xpert course Petal50. I missed mine last year when I went abroad so its interesting to read your experiences. Look forward to hear what happens next week!

Re: My experience of week one "Xpert Patient Course"

Juts to pick up on one tiny point "parking was a ******" - it is a ****** at hospitals, and will continue to be so, as long as people, who have alternatives (eg decent public transport, decent park & ride, fitness & proximity to walk / cycle etc), continue to drive, instead of using other options. I'm lucky, I live only 1.5 miles from my hospital, and wouldn't consider getting there by any means other than on my bike. Both & and my partner (no diabetes) have recently volunteered for physiological research trials, and both of us had to hide the fact we arrived and, particularly, left by bike - if either of us had felt unwell (hypo in my case; after effects of muscle biopsy in his case), we could have stopped and sat on grass verge or pavement far more easily than if driving / in taxi / on bus.

My experience of Week 2 "Xpert Patient Course"

Well here I am again reporting in on week 2 of the xpert course.
We started half an hour earlier and the parking was easier. Now the educators...carrying on from last week... Hazel's title is Diabetic/dietitian nurse and (HCP name removed) is the NHS dietian.
Ok this week focused on weight management... thats a laugh.
We started the session with a tongue in cheek dvd about so called crash diets.
basically big guy starving himself to loose weight to get his dream girl, did no exercise, the narrator explained what happens in the body if youdont eat regular balanced meals, when the guy got to a stand still on loosing the lbs he started exercising with his friend, but didn't loose any more so the binged and then started healthier balanced food plan along with exercise and bingo he got the girl.
it was entertaining but not particularly diabetic related.
the eat well plate was discussed with ephesis on portion size, i was amazed how many of the others did not know that if say it says 5-9 portions of veg or fruit that if you had twice the weight of a portion that counts as TWO portions, sorry am i missing something there??? it seemed obvious to me but not to some of the others. eg 1 hobnob biscuit is 1 portion, not like it was said half a packet of said biscuits was a portion as it was the same food.
(Name removed - Dietician) seemed very focused on calorie counting too and nothing was said at all about low carb dieting, I was very good and did not voice my opinion on my own success at low carbing. To be honest i was alittle disappointed this week as i found not alot of relevance was paid to bg levels. it was even suggested "we" could eat a small bar of milk chocolate without it affecting blood sugar levels, derh  have i given this up for no reason then? They want us to do our own eatwell plate so that will be interesting next time.
One of the other ladies in the group wants to meet for coffee and chat about low carbing and perhaps going to the gym togeather which i felt was nice. i told her about this site and have emailed details to her.
In some ways i feel more in control of my diabetes than alot of the others in the group but i have had to make the effort and do it myself and not depend on the professionals to tell them what to do.
So we will see what next week brings.... keep you up dated all!

i did the xpert course in early 2009, IMO it is a waste of time, the same bull being spouted by the same healthcare team that you see at your gp's surgery. i saw it as an ideal opportunity to meet other diabetics and talk to them personally before they followed the 'nhs' spiral.

there is no 'carb awareness' being taught to newly diagnosed diabetics. i was the youngest person there (39yrs) but had been diagnosed the longest (7yrs) no one tested whilst we were there, and the recipes in the folder are a train crash waiting to happen. (i know i tested em  ) the newbies sat there and absorbed the 'official' guidance

i am wondering when the newly diabetics will be told that total carbohydrates will influence all bg levels. not just sugar or high GI/GL foods

(not a slow news day in my world, just mooching around :D )

Petal50 and the "Xpert Patient Course" Week 3

A cold and foggy morning and off for week 3.... Carb Awareness. Yes I thought something i want to gen up on..folks seemed surprised that carbs turn to glucose and have affect BG levels. the educators set us abit of a quiz about what foods GI , carb value and calories have in them and which are good or bad for us.
Previously we have been in pairs and with the same person so i suggested we paired up with different people to get a better understanding of the group. this idea was received well and did actually work well. One guy was one the ball and had found the relevant pages in the xpert work book we are following.... surely thats cheating but only joking, i asked about artificial sweeteners so have the question about isomalt answered.
the big thing that made us all laugh was that chocolate cake was better than chips for slow release glucose... one lady was off to the supermarket as soon as our time was up
most of the members of the group now have their blood results on paper from their gps or surgery. but still only two of us self test. to be honest i think the others just can't be bothered to take that much control. so as the educators keep saying it is our choice, with food, and how proactive we want to be.
Unfortunately i am unable to attend the next session due to having a hospital appointment, but its theme is food labelling so i can catch up from the literature they have given us to follow.
The following week is discussing the complications of diabetes which i think may be interesting if not alittle scary talking about loss of limbs and one's eyesight.
will keep tou posted... thanks for reading folks, i hope it encourages others to go on the course if offered to them.
Oh yes one thing afew of us discussed on the carpark afterwards is going out for a meal togeather at the end of the course, good idea??? also for us all to keep in touch socially for moral support.

Re: Petal50 and the "Xpert Patient Course" Week 3

That will be interesting to see where you all decide to go and what to eat!

yes candyfloss, not so much where as what everyone decides to eat.... could be very interesting!!!!
All those healthy options  and is it chips OR chocolate cake??? mmmmm tough decission., will keep you posted.

I am on this course at the moment, next week is my food labeling too. I got to admit i have enjoyed the course so far and found it very informative.Theres 8 of us,and the good thing is we have been able to swap ideas on such things as recipes, and what foods we have been able to find thats ok for us. the other good thing is because most of us need to lose alot of weight we have all been referd to a health centre, where we get a personal trainer to go threw a exercise plan with us.This is free for 8 weeks, then half price after. So us ladys are all going to go together, which i feel is great as we all are after the same goal and can all support each other.
Im glad im at last getting to see some results, i was referd to a consultant 12 weeks ago to start Victoza and at last i have a appointment to see him next week. MY DN is real pleased with me tho, ive lot 15k in 5 months :D

Well done on your weight loss pinktess

and good luck with the rest of your course :D
