phantom hypos

hi just wondered how others have got through the shakes ect when your sugar levels begin to come down from being high . i tend to start shaking around 8.9 and tend to eat sugar to stop it .but would love to here if you have some advice so i can get it low without this happening .
 
How high do you get to drop to 8.9? That's really high to start with!

I had vicious drops when first diagnosed but they really have gone now I have low carb sorted and keep generally more steady. In the 8s is high for me.

I did learn to slow the drop by monitoring bs on the way down and to go for a walk to bring down slowly. The day I tried a run dropped it so fast it was horrific!
 
Mid 5's when I first started out with much lower carbing around 6 or 7 years ago for me.

Phantom Hypos.... I really like the sound of that. Much better then false hypos.
 
I don’t think I’d be eating sugar if my blood sugars were 8.9, that’s pretty high. Your shaking might be caused by high sugars rather than dropping sugar levels. My advice would be to get your sugar levels under better control with the help of your diabetes nurse or dietician. It worked for me.
 
I only had a few incidents of 'the wobblies' but when diagnosed I had a BG level of 17.1mmol/l.
I found that sitting down with a warm drink and slowly chewing about three grapes would stop it. I did not want to maintain high levels, but that seemed to be just enough to make me feel normal again. Before long I was feeling OK at 8mmol/l or even less.

Yikes... False hypo's at that level? That's.... Oof. I used to treat those -used to get them at about 5,5- with a bit of food, not sure I would now. I'd either try to ride them out, or have some nuts/meat/eggs. (Something with protein anyway). If you're treating them with sugar it'll be that much longer until you get used to lower levels, and you really do need to get these levels down.

At 8.9 you definitely don't need more sugar that's just adding fuel to the fire. You will never get used to lower numbers if you treat false hypo's,

i have been a lot higher i have now been refered to a specialist to try and soort things.

my levels were spot on a year ago ,but due to stress this year its been all over the place .up to 33 down to 7 shaking at 11 .my average is now 13 .in feb they thought i had a tia but nope ,it then happened 5 times with a blood pressure rise to 191/101 at one point . its been a try of different meds this year .im now back on metformin at double the dose and things are coming down and slowly getting better.

well fasting of 11.9 and an average of 13 .but high after food of around 15-18
 
What are you eating that your levels increase that much. A rough guide is that if your levels increase by more than 2 the meal contained too many carbs for you.

I personally think you need to eat something other than sugar- what about nuts as someone suggested. Maybe an egg? that may be enough for your body to feel a bit better without adding more carbs to the mix. If you really feel you need something with carbs what about some tomatoes or a vegetable( lowish carb).

I agree with the previous posters you need to get your levels lower and eating sugar won't help.

I have had similar levels as you, so don’t be disheartened, the main thing is feeling well. So I know what you mean by yo yo levels and then feeling phantom hypo as your body is trying to adjust. I usually eat a couple of jellybabies (lots of type 1 and nurse told me these are good as low fat) but technically you don’t need the glucose boost, but if your body is telling you then maybe try one or two followed by a glass of water, give 5 mins and see. If symptoms have settled then maybe snack with few nuts, salami or olives or something so you feel you’ve eaten to cover it for a little while.
I have had it at 6, 5 and 4 all not real hypos. But if you come down fast from top teens twenties (as I did) then your body feels it! Good luck with getting a more level reading going on, hopefully less carbs and the metformin will enable you to do that.
