Type of diabetes
Type 1
Once diagnosed, one will inevitably encounter well wishers hoping to help or trying to manage their own grief and fear. Following are the few types of reactions, pick the one you hate or like most:

1. The silver lining : eg, it's a good thing! Now you'll be more aware of your body
2. You're lucky : it could have been something worse
3. Is it contagious? : It's genetics right? It can't happen to me also right?
4. You must have done something to deserve it : must be due to your lack of doing xxx, must be because you did yyy
5. Opportunity to promote their cause : religion, kangen water, miracle cures
6. Cry and hug
7. Horrified : you have to jab yourself? Ew!
8. No big deal : all of us have something. I have high blood pressure.
9. At least you found out
10. Share all their near death experience
11. Let me try! Let me try! I think i can be a talented nurse.
12. Actually you should stop insulin. Docs don't know everything. (You say no) you should be open minded!
13. You must have done something (bad) in your previous life.
14. Rather diabetes than stupid!
15. You should stop insulin! Be open minded.
16. Just one (sugary) won't hurt.
17. Oh I won't meet you for meals again. I'm scared of needles. Watching you makes me scared.
18. It's nothing.

Number 5.

The rest I can deal with. The absence of science that has a "restraining order" with religion gets my "satanic" goat!

I'm T2 as well. I've had all of those said to me, and they all irritate me, but yes as a T2 it's no 4, especially when you know the person saying it to you has exercised less than you and had a worse diet than you. grrrr.

number 2 for me -- at least currently :)

people who don't know all the 43 years of FUN I have had with this "it's no big deal " disease.

A variation of 7 - I could never do that or I don't know how you do it (when I'm testing or injecting) annoys me the most. It's not always appropriate to respond with its this or die. :)

Can I choose three? : D For me, it'd be 1, 5 and 7.

1 - because I don't need or want a tedious medical condition to encourage me to look after myself (I did and do anyway)
5 - oh, yes, right - how silly I am - there's a simple cure and I never thought to look, and neither did any experts *eye roll*
7 - unless the person who says that is a child or something, I always tell them I don't have to inject myself because I've got a choice - inject or die.

You should know, as a moderator you could be breaking the rules by having THREE choices, tut tut, lol ;) :D
Mine was number 8 :rolleyes::p

Some possible responses:
Nos. 1, 2 & 8: OK -- you can have it instead then. Enjoy!
No.3: Yes it is contagious and I have just infected you.
No.4: Yes you're right -- I should have adjusted my genetic code before I was born. **** -- forgot.
No.6: If you're so sympathetic why not just buy me some test strips
No.7: It's not too bad -- here, let me demonstrate on you....

Actually, I could have picked them all and probably added a few new ones too! : D

It's really annoying when people make patronising or unhelpful comments about diabetes.

Hohoho, got a new one tonight. Add no.9
