I think we tend to think about popcorn as being safe because it's low calorie, but for us, calories are kind of unhelpful, it's all about the speed of delivery of sugar - and popped corn is just corn where the sugar is easier to get to... so, yeah, I would think about it like you're a recovering alcoholic - "is this corn derived vodka better than beer because it has fewer calories?" - I mean, as a question that makes no sense.. so (at least to me, maybe you could safely manage the vodka in that analogy) you're just better not having it at all..
