Porridge v readybrek

I was wondering fir a change is ready brek OK to have
Hi @Irishmist66 . Neither Ready brek or porridge are good choices if you are using low carb way of eating. Ready brek , being highly processed, has more carbs than porridge, which is also quite high at around 20 gr of carb per serving. Your choice, and I don’t know what type of diabetes you have, or if you are on medication?
It is not clear if you are seeking low carb options, but if you like your porridge here are some alternative recipies

Eggs make a good breakfast (so long as no bread with them). Otherwise fish, bacon (or other meat), cheese or plain greek yogurt with berries and/or nuts and/or seeds.
Before diagnosis I always had porridge for breakfast - I soon swapped that for boiled eggs as soon as my BG meter showed what porridge did to my blood glucose .

if you have access to a glucometer then try it. Test before you eat and then retest 2 hours later, If there is a rise of more than 2 mmol/l then its a poor choice and to be avoided if possible. I used to use cuppa oats in the sachet but gave up because they spiked my by 4 or more clicks, making my sugars worse than necessary.

My diabetic nurse told me to have porridge or weetabix. Only diagnosed 5 weeks ago type 2. If anything My sugars are dropping 3 hours after. I don't have time yo do eggs before work but do have poached eggs with low cal brown bread I've no clue. Don't even know how many carbs a day I am meant to have not seen dietician yet..sorry I'm a bit clueless and scared

No wonder she's a diabetic nurse..

It's far better to skip breakfast totally than have a high carb one. Try just a coffee or tea with cream instead.
If you absolutely have to eat something then eggs, bacon, cold meats or cheese would be far far better for your blood sugars than stodgy carbs.

Your diabetic nurse is the clueless one.
And don't worry about not having had the dietician appointment yet, you can get all the info you need on diet here and check everything with a glucose meter as has already been suggested.

So is weetabix not good either. I do need eat before I leave home as would ve going about 4 hours with nothing I'd never cope

It's ok: have some bacon and eggs instead.
If you don't have time, make boiled eggs at the weekend and keep them in the fridge. 2 boiled eggs and a black coffee is as good as anything. Cold sausages, cheese and ham: all very good.

I switched to milled flaxseed which is low carb, I add a little chia seed and a few sunflower seeds or a little chopped nuts - if you try this maybe add some oatbran until you get used to the taste.
I make mine with a spoonful of coconut milk and hot water plus cinnamon, microwaved for 2 mins. Served with double cream.

If you have access to a microwave then you could make batches of breakfasts and put them in the fridge. Eggs may be better fresh. But there are many low carb recipes that a microwave opens up the possibility of such as low carb muffins,

Scrambled eggs in a microwave takes literally two minutes to make. It’s easy to add cut up sausage or a slice of bacon for variety. For a cold breakfast, plain Greek yoghurt with a couple of berries and/ or nuts is quick, simple and tasty. I keep a couple of packs of different berries in the freezer - fresh ones from the shops go mouldy too quickly to be economical. Fresh berries from the garden would be ideal.

My breakfast is usually rasberries blackberry's and a few strawberries with two tablespoons of 0% yoghurt (fage) and soya milk and sometimes a spoonfull of keto granola blended in a bottle the night before..

I'm not a morning person so can get grab this from the fridge and go..

You can get the blenders with 2 bottles on amazon for about £20

Not sure how I will get on in the winter maybe change to a frozen berries mix ?.

Mike..
