Hi, I have weighted 200g of raw potatoes, according to the internet potatoes should have around 18g of carbs in 100g . So it all should be somewhere around 35-40g. I will cook and mash them... 3 units should cover 40g usually for me.

Is this calculation ok or I'm missing something, I'm asking this because my BG was a bit higher than expected from this amount of carbs last time I've been eating potatoes (compared to bread or whatever)

Thanks

Your calculations are correct.
Whether this is too much for you, depends on your body and so your BG monitor can help. I like potatoes, but they're the last thing I would consider eating.

I've just eaten, I'll post the results :)

Sorry, I should have checked that point before posting. Yes, I know nothing about whewther T1s should be eating potatoes or not.
Hey you're not the only one! I find it complicated enough working my Type 2 out let alone any other type :)

When I mash potatoes, I put them in the fridge overnight and reheat the next day.

This lowers the carbs in them, I do not count carbs, but I have tested before and after meals when I have eaten them I have found the right portion size.

We can get lower carb spuds here called Spudlites, when they are available.

How did you get on @JustLucky?
I find mash one of the least problematic carbs but others find it can spike them a lot.

Bolus 4u maybe 15-20min before eating and spiked 7.5 at most. After half an hour the potatoes have digested and I've anticipated a hypo so have eaten a half of a chocolate biscuit :banghead: and kept BG in 4-5 range. I did take a short walk to a shop nearby in the meantime.
So I feel it is actually the potatoes higher GI that's spiking, not the carb amount. So next time I will take 3 units maybe a bit earlier, or same as today and eat a whole biscuit later
I thought maybe with cooking more carbs appear for some reason, but apparently they don't... :pompous:

Later I went running and didn't remember to snack on time, so I spent my time sitting on a bench looking at Libre waiting for BG to go up... It did go up eventually so I finished my run just on time.

So the conclusion is that potatoes have carbs like any other food, just a bit higher GI...

Thanks everyone, it's great to have a community where you can ask these 'silly' questions and be understood... :borg:

@Riva_Roxaban I'll try to find these lower carb, so I can have a bit more on my plate, although I'm quite used to 'diabetic' food quantity, I used to eat 3 plates every meal before diagnosis :), this 'diabetic' diet actually seems a bit more normal... What I miss the most is rice, especially extra rice in a Chinese restaurant.
EDIT: I should try the cooling reheating method with rice :), that's a great idea actually.

I'll probably try low carb someday when I have more time, to see how does that feel, it seems like a good idea to take a rest from the bolus insulin and use only basal while eating low/no carb food...

@rosemaree
I usually weight raw food as it's much simpler and I never know how do they cook their potatoes, were they dry when on scale or whatever. o_O Today my potatoes weighted more after cooking than before, so I don't know... I suppose carbs shouldn't appear from nowhere.
