Good evening all.
My doctor called and said I was pre diabetic with a reading of 6 look at changing diet getting more exercise etc loosing weight etc
I’ve started to doing some reading and I really don’t understand my reading of 6 how bad is this. My blood test was not fasting it was mid morning I’d had breakfast under an hour before and walked a mile to the surgery
What do you experts think?

I’m 52 10 stone and exercise 4-5 times a week run cycle etc I have lost half a stone since lockdown I thought because I’m doing less exercise so loosing muscle mass and I’m eating three meals a day as furloughed, where normally I’m a shift worker so my eating is erratic. Since diagnosis I’ve not eaten chocolate, biscuits or cakes however I eat a lot of carbs pizza pasta potatoes rice all the normal stuff .
Iam very concerned obviously. Doctor also threw in I had high cholesterol.

Any advice would be good thank you

Depends whether that reading of 6 was an hba1c (bottom end of prediabetic) or a random blood sugar reading (not too bad at all). If it's an hba1c then it's an average of the last 3 months, so your levels may have been worse at the beginning of lockdown....

If it's prediabetes then it suggests that your body is incapable of processing too many carbohydrates (everyone's tolerances vary but the massive increase of T2 diabetes in the last 50 years since the "fat is bad sugar is good" mantra came out suggest that society as a whole is eating too much).

Giving up on chocolate, biscuits and cakes is good but you probably need to cut down on your total carbohydrate level - that means reducing bread (including pizza), pasta, rice, potatoes, and be very careful of fruits such as apples which are packed full of fructose. (Most berries are fine).

My suggestion, phone your surgery and ask whether that 6 is an hba1c - if it is then have a read on this forum about T2 diabetes and diet....

And if it is prediabetes consider buying a meter so that you can tell what different foods are doing to your system, some people can cope with more carbs than others and the only way to tell is to test before a meal and two hours after.

Good luck and welcome to the forums.

Not a terrible number, it’s the trend that might get you.
you might be developing a fatty liver.

Drop the carbs and I’d bet your cholesterol will come down, it’s all linked. You may not need drastic carb cuts, but you should measure and nix the foods that cause you to spike. No need to nix chocolate if you don’t spike, but you won’t know until you begin testing.

I don't know what the 6 stands for... Could be HbA1c, could be Mmol/l, so yeah.... https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html <-- that is my own little quick-start guide, if you're interested in getting your numbers back to good, but I am not too sure about your diagnosis, not knowing what the 6 represents. Ditch the pizza, pasta, potatoes, rice etc, because the "normal stuff" is no good for diabetics. Good news being, extra dark chocolate is back on the menu. ;)
Good luck!
Jo
PS: Get your carbs down and your cholesterol will follow suit!

Our chocolate isn’t going down without a fight
