Type of diabetes
Don't have diabetes
Hello

I'm new! Been reading the forums for a week or two now. I've just had diabetes tests. My doctor is satisfied as my results are in the normal ranges but I'm still concerned I'm heading towards diabetes. My dad is type 2 and I had some high readings when I used his monitor which is why I went to the gp.

My fasting glucose was 5.9 and hba1c was 40.

I have a bmi of 26 so have some weight to lose. My waist measurement is 36 inch so again there's improvement. I'm starting to cut carbs with a view to losing weight.

I also need to start exercising but finding it really hard to fit it in with my lifestyle.

Any other suggestions or tips?

Just continue to live a happy life and eat a healthy balanced diet but also read and enjoy the treads on here some great advice and ideas are given

Most people are " normal" :) there is a huge range of normal,
with an Hba1Cof 40 it might be sensible t cut down the carbs a bit and if you want to reduce your waistline given you are already ok on the weight front, maybe try some exercises? I can't say as I would know what ones might be good for you, but then my waist hasn't see 36 inches for many a year - so if I ever get that far i will be on cloud 9 .

Good luck though

When I was younger I used to have quite a slender waist, and when I ate low carb the first place I used to see the change was at waist level - now that I am older it has started to show higher up, just under my ribs. I definitely felt better eating low carb foods, and suspect that if I'd not gone onto a diet supposed to lower cholesterol I'd not have had such high BG levels. You could try cutting out the high carb foods such as grain, starchy vegetables, the high carb fruits and lentils, and see if that alters your shape and BG levels.

Thank you

I've started reducing carbs and I'm getting some gentle exercise done. Just walks on my lunch break and dancing around the house to music.

I feel pretty sure that if I carry on with the way I was, I'll be diabetic in a few years time.

Im off to investigate some breakfast and lunch ideas now I'm trying to avoid cereal, toast and sandwiches!

I would agree that as a twenty something your readings are quite high and blood sugars in the 4's would be better for you. My own bs stayed pretty close to 5.0 before becoming 8 and then suddenly taking off. Knowing what I know now, I should have seen the warning as soon as it exceeded 5, but the medical printout said - non fasting 8 = normal and I didn't know any better - in practice having never gone to a medical on a full stomach in my life I should have known that my non-fasting of 8 was actually not the normal they said it was - If I'd known I would have dealt with this five years ago .
Good on you for being so alert to the possibility so quickly.

Good luck with the diet.

Hi! You have a genetic marker so it's wise to take steps to avoid a diagnosis. Don't get too hung up on it, but it would be good for your health in general to cut carbs, particularly refined and sugar, and get a little more exercise. No need for gym membership, but walk to the shop instead of drive, maybe.

This is what I'm thinking, now is the time to make changes. I have a bad back today and I've eaten chocolate and rice as I felt sorry for myself. Back on it tomorrow!

Dark chocolates-with very little sugar are actually good for you-and what you are trying to do with finding low carb breakfasts and lunches is just right-it is much easier to replace an unhealthy habit with a healthy one than to just quit something.
