Processed meats

It would seem it is the salt and preservative content that does the damage.
Eat fresh as much as possible and have these products as an occasional treat rather than relying on them.

Good advice!

It does seem that it is the salt and chemical preservatives used in the process of curing is the reason for the warning. Apparently processed meats were found to contain on average four times more salt and 50 per cent more preservatives than unprocessed meats. Its certainly getting some coverage today, this morning I read it online, seen it on GMTV, and listened to it on the radio also.

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
How do they cope in countries where preserved meats are an important part of their culture, such as middle Europe. Do they have higher levels of heart disease?
Hana
PS Iwas born into one of those cultures and LOVE my salamis and hams.

Death rates from CHD are higher in Central and Eastern Europe.

Though Poland is the exception with a fall in deaths from heart disease.
In 1991 a change in government policy on food subsidies, removed subsidies from sat fat.(I'm not clear whether this is foods containing sat fat (which could include sausage/hams etc) or just cooking fats.
There was a drop in sat fat consumption by 7% and a large rise in polyunsaturated fat intake.
A study found that by 2002, deaths from coronary heart disease had dropped by over a third in the 45-64 age group - a 38% drop for men and 42% for women.

This article, albeit from the Independant, has a thread in Diabetes Food Forum under the heading Processed Meats.

Yes and a few years back they said eggs were bad for you.

Tomorrow no doubt they will discover something else that is bad for you.

How about beef burghers?

I know the takeaway variety have a lot of poor press, but good quality supermarket ones may be a good bet.
Also, you don't have to have all the other cr*p you seem to get with a takeaway.

Off to the co-op to investigate the Aberdeen Angus lean burghers. :D

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
I have had the Co-op Aberdeen angus Burger's taste really good and I'm picky about what I eat.

A couple of those and a few oven chips.....mmmh ! :D

BBQ tonight :D . I make my own burgers lean minced steak from my very good butcher. The mince may be a little dearer than supermarket ,but because it has little fat it goes much further I mix with finely chopped onion and that is the base ,if you finely chop raw chillies or basil or rosemary(especially good with minced lamb).Season well I use a veg stock cube although this may be too salty for some. You can also experiment with a little chillie sauce or worcester sauce .Tons better than bought ones and you know what is in them.
