PROSTATE PROBLEMS

I had my interview with the Specialist today. It is cancer of the Prostate. They now want to do further MRI scans to see if it has spread to my bones.

Immediately, they want me to undergo Radio Treatment. It involves 21 days of tablets and after that a course of injections every week for 4 weeks then a different course of injections every week for 12 weeks and then a different course every 6 months.

Meanwhile I have got to reduce my red meat intake and eat plenty of chicken and oily fish. I have also got to do lots of brisk walking every day.

If all goes well they may NOT have to operate - but if not ....?

The Specialist is quite upbeat and hopes they may have caught it in time.

About 5 years ago a friend of mine died of Prostate Cancer and then about 3 years ago I met a man who was recovering from Prostate Cancer who advised me to see my Doctor and get tested. I did see my Doctor who asked me if I had plenty of pressure when urinating - when I replied that I had he said that I did NOT have Prostate problems.

A year ago I was reading in the Diabetic Forum of someone who had a blood test which diagnosed an enlarged Prostate - he had Prostate Cancer.

I inquired at myDoctor's Surgery about this blood test and was told that I could only have it if my Doctor or Diabetic Nurse recommended it.

About 6 months ago I was having my 6 monthly "check up" with my Diabetic Nurse and mentioned this blood test to her so although I did not have the normal symptoms (lack of pressure) she agreed to let me have the blood test.

If all of these "little things" had not occurred I would still not know that I had a problem.

SO I WANT TO THANK WHOEVER IT WAS THAT MENTIONED ON THIS FORUM ABOUT THE BLOOD TEST FOR CHECKING FOR PROSTATE PROBLEMS.

I am 77 and quite happy to go when the Lord calls me.

I am sad though for my wife who will be left alone as a widow.

BUT - I might still live until I am 90, who knows? Don't really want to live to I am 90 unless I am in good health'

We all have to go sometime.

sorry to that, good news though that prostate cancer is slow to progress. Hopefully it has been caught in time, good luck.

Isn't that what its all about????? Sorry, just had to take the 'P' there. I wish you well and good outcome since none of us guys want this following us around. My son had a similar brush with C in an associated area, but was quickly sorted out and is still clear of secondary effects. My prostate is also playing up, but the pills so far seem to be working and keeping the waterways clear. Good luck with the next part of the process.

Thank you "old warrior" - things aren't so bad really, we can always get it removed if there is no secondary infection. I pity the ladies for some of the problems they get. Getting the right information early enough solves a lot of problems. I would not have known about the blood test if someone had not mentioned it on this Forum.

Hi. Yes, all men should have the PSA test in older age despite many medics saying it's unreliable. It's still a lot better than nothing and helped my GP find my enlarged prostate which led to finding my enlarged bladder. I've now had the prostate op and have no cancer but all thanks to the PSA test.

Sorry to hear your news. My husband was diagnosed almost 2 years ago with advanced prostate cancer spread to bones and lymph nodes. He is still going strong so even the worst case there are a number of different treatment that will work for a time. I would recommend looking at "Prostate Cancer UK" web site. There is a lot of helpful information there and also a forum you could join and ask questions.

Hi. Yes, all men should have the PSA test in older age despite many medics saying it's unreliable. It's still a lot better than nothing and helped my GP find my enlarged prostate which led to finding my enlarged bladder. I've now had the prostate op and have no cancer but all thanks to the PSA test.

The was a mass PSA testing organised by a local football club, I signed up but at 70 they said I was too old. I understand the NHS also don't do routine testing after age 69 as the results are too unreliable and lead to unnecessary treatment.

Hello Mr Pot, Sad to hear that - it was my DBN who "advised" me to have the PSN - I am eternally grateful to her - I am almost 77.

Good afternoon "Daibell" - In my case it was reliable - but a bit of a shock to hear that I had cancer. I have already started my tablets and in 2 weeks time I start my injections. I have thought about the OP but my wife who is a nurse is dead against it. What are the side effects from the OP?

Thank you my friend "Brunneria". Thankfully I am not in control of my life span - I am happy to go at anytime. My first wife died of cancer 28 years ago and her final 6 months were not nice. It took me 10 years to get over it. My present wife is very kind and of a gentle nature, she is very supportive and I would be lost without her. I almost lost her in 2012 - but thankfully she recovered.

Now, my main concern is how I can make her life easier if my departure is sooner than expected. By nature I am pretty up-beat but the news of this cancer was a shock to me initially. Today I feel more settled in my thoughts.
