is there any mileage in using the off the shelf body building protein drinks as a meal substitute ? , i am type 2 , diagnosed last september and have dropped four stone since on the mediterranean diet and i need to shed another two at least , i train a minimum of 8 hours over seven days , average one hour or more of aerobic work and one of weights , a programme set by the gym instructor , doing great on it , once a week usually weekends it is up to four hours , any suggestions re the drinks folks ?

Hiya, I tried the whey protein one I found in Tesco, as it was low carb. Didn't find it good at all I'm afraid. It sent me shooting up into the high teens. Made me feel really ill. I gave it a good shot, different times of day, different days with different amounts of inbuilt stress, but no. Not for me. Too much protein in one hit maybe? I don't know. There are as many different answers as there are diabetics, as I'm sure you know. Good luck with it.

Holland and Barratt do 2 hemp ones. I tried the organic one. 7 grams carbs and 6 g fibre, per serving. Quite a coarse texture (think wholemeal bread flour, not icing sugar), but I loved the nutty almost earthy flavour, and it combines well with yoghurt, fruit or milk.

I think quality is everything with those types of supplements - read the label carefully before buying. They can be full of processed **** and cheap ingredients (including cheap vitamins and minerals). I think it's definitely a case of you get what you pay for. If your digestion is the least bit iffy, they can cause all sorts of problems.

from what I have been reading it's a waste of money and you don't need high protein, the body will convert excess protein to sugar
the Mediterranean without the main carbs. bread, pasta etc is fine. most need to supplement with fat [more olive oil/butter] to get their calories. bullet-proof coffee and such

l use The Protein Works they have all their items marked if suitable for diabetics etc. l use their whey 80 after workouts but not unless l have worked out

no pun intended but food for thought there , just thought about them for a portable breakfast as such , looked at the off the shelf body building stuff , so much sugar in it , think i will spend the money , get my cosco card back and bulk buy canned tuna and chicken breast , look at bean salads as well , bread is ok for me as long as it is no more than four slices of wholemeal , the usual un refined carbs are ok as well , the med diet suits our house as the other half has a health issue , thanks for the tips folks , keep smiling ,HBD .

The protein drink l use is not a mass of carbs and l am unable to eat to put into me what a 250ml drink does post workout...l would be ill amongst other things my stomach has shrunk.
As l say l only use it post workout to help me.

google my protein or bulk powders very good products and some are very low carb i use them and i never get a blood spike

Regards

Mark

I use Dr Mercola's whey protein with chia seeds which was recommended to me by my PT, knowing I was diabetic. I've been using it for months, once a day for breakfast, made with almond milk and berries. Its lush and doesn't spike my bloods, is a great source of protein and is low carb, but it is difficult to get hold of. as itsfrom the USA. Would make a great portable meal, but you need to drink it as soon as its made.
