Pulling out of the dive

Please don't shout me down for this post, because this is actually starting to concern me.

My weight is now down to 68kg - I'm 5'6", so well in to my BMI normal range. I sort of feel this is the ideal weight for me, but the last 2 kg have come off in the last couple of weeks and I'm starting to worry about it going any further. I'm also getting more aches and pains around my stomach and ribs which I think may be related.

So what should I eat that will bring me neatly out of the dive? I eat quite a lot of fat, mainly in yoghurt, cream and bacon. I eat a lot of eggs too. I'm carbing at between 30-60g per day, mainly in porridge and veg. A couple of days ago I had 2 fry ups in the same day - I can't imagine that is good for me.

I'm running out of ideas of how to keep the weight on, but keep the carbs down.

Know EXACTLY what you mean. Had the same thing. Hit BMI of 22 and thought "how do I stop this" my answer was nuts! I eat tons of them! They have stacks of protein, and some very low gi carbs, but never seem to raise my BG. I have loads of walnuts in their shells-I like them, and read that they have all sorts of "wonder food" properties. I eat all nuts though, other than cashews (high carbs and GI) although cashews of course aren't really nuts,
So graze
On nuts! Weight didn't go up, but the five stopped sharp and BGs never changed.

Try Defren's home made ice cream recipe she posted in the Cheeseburger Pie thread. We made it Rhubarb flavoured and its well nice. Has an very large calorific content. A sliver around 3" x 2" by half an inch thick has 325 calories but only 3g of carbs.

What are your current bg levels like Swimmer? If they are well within your targets you could start to increase your carb intake, as long as your meter tells you it is OK. I found that after weight loss my insulin resistance was sufficiently reduced so that I could happily eat more carbs with no ill effects.

If your bg levels are still not low enough it could be that you are T1 and burning body fat and muscle, I see from your sig that you are awaiting a C pep test, so it could be time to talk to your team

If I have got the wrong end of your db stick just ignore everything I just posted :silent:

That's greater swimmer! How much weight have you lost?

You are supposed to be able to run a low-carb diet in maintenance mode, by increasing your fat and protein intake slightly and your therefore your calorific intake. It's probably easier said than done in practice though. Your best bet is getting hold of one of the Atkins books and seeing what they recommend for the maintenance phase.

Or like Sid says, the other option is to up your carbs carefully and see what it does to your BG.

Not sure that I've ever met anyone that successfully completed a diet and had to worry about staying there.

Well done

Sid,

my levels are stabilising at below 8 after 2 hrs and fasting at 4.5-6.0 - but I do have the luxury of using the basal insulin. I am very sensitive to carbs though - a slice of normal bread will send me in to double figures.

I am still waiting on the proper c-peptide test results. My doc left a message that the hospital would be in touch and then promptly went on holiday. I suspect that they are going to either say my pancreas is shot or that I'm LADA - amounts to the same thing I guess.

Boro

I've lost 12kg since the end of January - not masses but I was only 80kg to start with. I have gone from a 34 to a 30" waist.
I will read up on the Atkins stuff. I am only worrying because I feel my body might complaining about a lack of food but then I forgot to eat lunch yesterday which is previously unheard of.
