Puzzled and Confused

I have recently had my yearly review for my diabetes and my bloods have gone up. My HB1ac reading has gone up from 56 to 61, but my cholestoral has come down from 7 to 4,7.
My diet is good I am don't over indulge in anything other than a few beers. My previous results have been around 50ish so I am puzzled as to why they have started to increase.

I am on glimpiride 2mg tablets, which my doctor wants to increase but I am reluctant but I can see them doing so. The statins that I am on pravastatin are the only ones that don't give me any side effects, I think the fact that I have given up red meat has also helped with cholestoral going down.

I am open to suggestions and ideas, I read all sorts from various different places and I do try to keep to a low carb diet. I read somewhere that eating in smaller periods of time may actually help has anyone got any experience of that?

Thanks in advance

Hi Dwelldon,

I hate to say it, but those beers aren't doing you any favours... Load of carbs in there, and no fibre or fat whatsoever to slow down the uptake. Do you test at home, by any chance? You might want to have a look at what your bloodsugars get up to after a couple of beers. (They don't call it liquid bread for the heck of it, after all.) As for cholesterol, the statins could be pushing those numbers down, seriously doubt red meat has anything to do with that, sorry... Most of our cholesterol is made in the liver, and has remarcably little to do with what we actually eat. @bulkbiker will know more. By the way, you say the statin has no side effect, but do you know it can up bloodsugars? In some people it even triggers T2 to begin with.

You mention low carbing, but it really doesn't go well with beer... And (red) meat wouldn't be bad in a low carb diet either... Which makes me wonder, what are you eating? Maybe your diet needs some tweaking. Could mean the difference between upping meds, or even dropping some. You never know eh. Let us know what an average day, or yesterday for example, looked like. Maybe we can help?

It isn't surprising that on a low carb diet your Statins reduce your Cholesterol so much. Mine was doing that even more ( was 3.6 at last test ) so I asked for the dose to be reduced since statins raise your Blood Sugar.

Well you say your diet is good, but how Low Carb is it? Those beers (unless Light/Lite Beer) are just liquid toast and are sure to spike your BG. Especially if you have more than one at a time.

Yes, Intermittent Fasting can help i.e. fasting one day per week or compressing the hours I which you eat down below 8hrs - most seem to settle on 6hrs.

Good Luck

This is what the FDA in the US has to say about Amaryl (Glimpiride),
https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2009/020496s021lbl.pdf

There is a section on secondary failure which may be relevant to your query.

Thanks for the reply, oh I know about the beer but I don't do anything too excessive.

A typical days food will be

Breakfast - Scrambled Egg
Lunch - Chicken Salad
Tea - Chicken / Fish with vegetables.

I do eat things like currys and stews but I do make sure that there is nothing in there that will cause spikes. Most of the time my highs on a morning, if I take readings at other times of the day then my I am generally between 4.8 and 6 which is normal as fair as I know.

I have tried taking the medication at evening to to see if that lowers it in a morning not really any affect. I seem to be suffering from sugar dumps during the night for some reason. I do have a stressful job so that could be a factor.

But I am extremely fit, I cycle and gym at least 3 times a week, I have never been fitter.

What I do find extremely frustrating is the advice from NHS is all geared towards folk with weight problems and not someone like me who's never been about 13 stone in my life, which for someone who is 6ft is healthly BMI

Thanks

Darren
