hi. I’m new to the forum. Diagnosed with pre diabetes. Recommended to look at the low carb diet by my practice nurse. Where’s the best place online to buy pyscillium husk powder from please. Thankyou

I do not know where you live as you have not filled in your profile, but you can purchase it in both Woolworths and Coles online stores here in Bundaberg.

I think Amazon do it.

Thankyou. I live in U.K. and am looking for best place online to purchase from. I have tried Holland and Barrett stores but they won’t have any in for a while and would like to get started with my bread making. Thankyou.

Thanks for the tag @Diakat , I usually get it from Amazon, the packet that @Tipetoo has linked.

I bought psyllium husk flour, coconut flour and a few other useful low carb items from Amazon - the brand is something like Bulk Powders for most but I look around for cheap options going at the time - I buy enough to get free delivery.

Hi Jan 7,
I don't wish to disrupt the thread, but I feel I must congratulate you on your god fortune in finding such a good (and brave) practice nurse!

Most GPs, Nurses and Dietitians dare not mention Low Carb for fear of losing their jobs, even though Dr David Unwin's Practice has had its Low Carb treatment of Type 2 Diabetics recognised by the NHS.
The medical establishment and Big Food companies are still fighting against it and calling it a 'fad diet'.

When making bread I add in rye flour, which disguises the purple colour. I also use milled seed mixture, as I find that whole seeds tend to make the bread more holed - if must be something in the physics of yeast activity.

I must be lucky! She had the book “the Diabetes weight loss cookbook” on her shelf and suggested it may help. I’m hoping it will.

I bought a couple of bags full of this stuff a couple of months back. I stopped low carb baking owing to time constraints. So I never got around to using it. I opened a packet up last night and added a teaspoonful to some double cream and it thickened it up almost like cornflour in a gravy.

From your experiments could you say what the effect of adding more or less psyllium husk to a bread recipe would be?

I used the flour, not husk, and added in a cup full to my normal bread recipe, then milled mixed seed from Lidl and a cup of rye flour. The result required double the amount of yeast and more time to rise, but was actually quite acceptable. As I added more low carb ingredients the bread did not rise as well, and I wish I could get hold of wheat gluten to add to the mix in order to get a better rise, as that is what becomes elastic and impervious to the CO2 the yeast releases and which gives the lightness. As it is I now add baking powder to try to plump up the result.
Psyllium is there just to make greater bulk for fewer carbs, and it is fairly neutral.
