Hi guys,

So what is the funniest, most absurd, or down right basic questions people have asked or quips said to you?

Cheers

You don't look like a diabetic.............

"You don't look like a diabetic your not pale and pasty"

The one I really like though and I've posted this one before was

"If you eat chocolate will you die"

"Are you off the insulin yet?"

"Why would you give yourself so many shots?"

I have had the reaction before "But you eat healthily and exercise!" Well, there is reason I am doing it!

When I tell people I often feel scrutinised, especially in terms of my body, tummy fat etc. This is not kind. In addition, I noticed I started comparing my body shape more with others', which is really not what I want to do.

So far my GPs have been very good since the diagnosis, really encouraging and understanding.

Can't recall any daft questions from friends and family, they have never assumed that their knowledge is anywhere near complete and have always asked me exactly how does it affect me,

However, that changed last weekend when several people who I was going to sail the Atlantic with in November, none of whom, worryingly, even have current up-to-date first aid qualifications decided that my present gall bladder infection precludes me from the trip in 3 months time, and I quote "especially being diabetic and might have a hypo". (I'm Type 2, Metformin and low carb, very unlikely to hypo). I'm amazed at how philosophical I've become in my old age, I've obviously been saved from a fate worse than death, being stuck with 5 uneducated, self opinionated idiots for 4 weeks. Sour grapes? Who cares, I was truly surprised that anybody could act as though they knew it all, when they clearly didn't.

When I was first diagnosed and struggling with mad blood sugars and the shock of being diagnosed with Type 1, I went out for a coffee with friends and one of them ordered a huge piece of a popular chocolate cake and then smirked at me "It really would be Death By Chocolate for you, wouldn't it?"

I was not impressed to put it mildly!

Are you still friends :)

No, actually : D But, to be fair, that's not because of his tactless comment.

The diabetes comment that really gets me riled is when you do an injection and people say "Ooh, I couldn't do that!" as though I'm doing it for a bit of fun or something. I usually smile brightly and reply "Well, then you'd die!"

That looks so bad written down, but sometimes I do lose my patience after years of the same old comments.

That's it, we hardly do it for the fun of it :banghead:

My Cousin, who is a NHS Nurse for a GP's practice - we were in a restaurant the other week - don't you want a pudding, Karen? my head just went slowly from side to side.o_O

Oh yeah, Cardiac rehab, after an hour exercise they bring out the tea and biscuits ( I wasn't a diabetic then) the Nurse said don't you want a biscuit? I quite firmly with a stern look on my face said, No thank you! Instead of the nurse leaving it at that.... Karen, it's ok to eat biscuits if you are taking a Statin!! I kinda jumped down her throat - first off, I'm not taking a Statin. Second, if I was it would still not be Ok, thirdly, if you pursue this nonsense advice I will be contacting my Cardiologist to send you on a rehabilitation course!

Azure - Death by Chocolate? Hmmm, that one is a show stopper!

Grajo - My hubby likes Skiing and I like culture trips. After my MI, I organised a 3 week trip to Vietnam, travelling on my own to remote places with my camera. My friends started to voice their disapproval, you are ill, what if your heart gives out, how will you get to a hospital? the list went on. My answer - I can stay at home in fear of what might be or, I can enjoy life to the full. If, something happens, I had a bl**** good time in the process! Don't let people take your life out of your hands.:)

Although the question I was asked isn't Diabetes related...it IS the dumbest question I have ever been asked. A few years back, I broke my neck in a swimming accident. Whilst still in hospital, a fellow patient asked me "will you ever be able to walk again?" I promptly burst into tears....shouted a few choice expletives, which alerted the ward sister who removed the lady from my vicinity rather sharpish. Some people are thoughtless and have ZERO TACT. :arghh: X

@azure I'm still smiling, If you were on another non diabetes related forum it might look bad written down but not on here.

I love chicken breasts stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon and my OH said to me one night "can you eat that". This is after being diagnosed a year and he still doesn't get it. :banghead:

I'm afraid that really tickled my sense of humour, but I suppose if I'd been in your situation I probably would have felt very differently.:wideyed:

Yeah, it's as if they expect us to say, after preparing a delicious healthy meal, "you're right, I can't eat that, silly me," and take the plate back to the kitchen.
