Re diagnosed from type 2 to 1.5

So after having constant high level instead of just letting my doctor up my tablets as he wanted I requested/insisted I went to see a specialist. I went Friday and he has said that I am actually LADA and need to come of my tablets and go on to insulin once I've seen the nurse, hopefully within the next 2 weeks. In the meantime if anyone could offer any words of wisdom or advice of what I should expect once I go onto insulin that would be great.

Also if anyone could shed some light on to why the consultant wanted to look at my armpit and elbows during the exam, that would be interesting.

I think the armpit/elbow thing might be him checking for skin darkening that can be associated with Type 2.

It's good you now have a correct diagnosis. You'd be surprised how many adults are assumed to be Type 2 when they're actually Type 1/LADA.

My advice is to buy Think Like A Pancreas (book) and to push to be taught carb counting and adjusting your insulin if you're prescribed pre-meal insulin.

Hopefully, lower sugars will mean you feel more yourself

I have an appointment with the diabetic nurse this Thursday to got me started so I'm sure I'll be back with loads of questions after that
 
I too was switched from a Type 2 diagnosis to 1.5 once they'd tested my GAD antibodies. I inject a small basal amount before I go to bed and it really doest hurt at all. I find it impossible to know whether any feelings can be attributed to the insulin or not as I generally feel good all the time. My diabetes consultant described my dose as 'virtually homeopathic', which made me chuckle. Good luck with everything and feel free to ask me anything specific.

Dvla if you drive once you know the insulin you will be taking.. and insurance...
 
Depends whether they give you a mixed insulin or a basal bolus regime.
You need to ask for a dafne course to get best control. Although some health people seem to think this is t1's only.. it isn't, its really for anybody on insulin that wants to gain beeter control and understanding.

I informed my insurance today and they really couldn't care less and have the forms printed for the DVLA for as soon as I know what I'm taking, did try to complete it online but fail to validate who I am on the new system lol
 
I have been using long acting insulting for just over a week now. Was originally put on to 8 units per night and then upped it to 12 as the nurse wanted my morning reading to be below 8. This morning it was 4.1 . Now I'm on insulin will I not get the liver dumps I used to get every morning ?
 

You may still get the liver dumps but the insulin might help your BS numbers.

How are your post-meal readings?

And forget to,ask - are you seeing a consultant?
 
I am still getting some quite high readings during the day, the morning reading does seen to be my best, But Christmas party's/ work quizzes may be contributing to that

The reason I ask is because it's not uncommon for '1.5s' to still get less urgent treatment and be left to go on for too long with less than acceptable sugars.

You may find that basal plus a bolus insulin works better and gives you smoother sugars through the day. Even if you only need a small amount of bolus it can still be the best option.

The fasting sugar target only is more for Type 2s.
 
The nurse I saw was really good, but she is on leave now, she has prescribed me the fast acting, it's the the fridge already but hasn't advised I use it yet, I'll re-send her all my readings in a weeks time and see what she advises then.. but I agree with you and am sure that's what see will suggest. At the moment I quite happy getting decent readings of a morning, although the 4.1 today was a bit of a shock and although not a hypo, it's the lowest I've seen for 18 months and freaked me a bit
 
@Lynmi Good news that you have the fast acting there waiting

I didn't mean to worry you, I'm just super-alert to misdiagnoses as my Type 1 was poorly diagnosed (the surgery basically told me only children under 12 would be Type 1) and I ended up quite ill.

It sounds like your nurse is on the ball and treating you properly from what you've said
 
I did have to insist on going to see a consultant, my doctor just wanted to up my meds. This is a new nurse I'm seeing since the diagnosis was changed. So I understand where your coming from
 
There was a very interesting study recently that showed that Type 1, far from being a disease of young children, was actually spread pretty equally across the age ranges.

I'm glad you pushed to see a consultant. You're clearly on top of it all

Hi to All,
Looking for what type 1.5 and LADA mean. I am carer for my wife, who was T2 about 5years ago. Metformin worked ok, until her kidneys were damaged, and her new tablets did not work very well; HbA1c 102 to 130. Finally got a diabetes nurse and wife is now on Toujeo insulin and Sitagliptin tablets. A lot lower HbA1c at 51, but struggling to get low blood sugar after meals, often 8 to 11. Is that normal?
 
LADA is type 1 developed in adulthood.
How soon after meals are the spikes and what is she eating?
