Red Rice Yeast

I am going for a blood test in a few weeks, A1c, liver and kidney function and cholesterol. My cholesterol is always high, 6.6 on the last one.

I have bought some Red Rice Yeast capsules, 2 doses are 800mg, 10mg of Monacolin K but I am scared about taking them as I have tried to avoid statins and know these are basically the same. The info online says it can cause liver damage.

I just want to take it for a while to get them off my back but feeling it is a bad idea now. I have not started yet, test is in 6 weeks.

Does anyone have any experience with this supplement? All views are welcome.

Sorry, I've never heard of it.

That's not saying much, I generally have no idea about supplements (as I'm a non-user) but I'm sure there are others on here who know more about them than me.

My GP told me I could try this, if statins from the pharmacy didn't agree with me. Never got around to it. Your posting this made me remember that conversation from nine years ago, and since I've been having *slight* cardiac issues, figured I might as well give it a go, so I just ordered a bottle this morning.

Statins (regular ones) very much did not agree with me, but I am approaching the yeast in the same way I would something on prescription; if there are side effects, and there might be, I can ditch them pronto, if they're too much of a problem. (If the joint pain returns, I'm done, immediately!)

So basically... Be sensible, don't take too high a dosage as that seems to be where problems occur, and if it doesn't feel right, don't. Go with your gut, I'd say...

Sorry I haven't tried them but I would be worried about using a supplement that could cause liver damage. Wishing you all the best as this journey is certainly a tough one.

I think I would avoid this personally, it doesn’t seem any different to taking statins, if a person needs statins and can take them without side effects (not everyone has them and do well on them) for me if it was the choice between statins & this I’d rather take the statins with the support that comes from my GP surgery such as blood tests etc than something that is not regulated
