Reintroducing some carbs for blood sugar and weight maintenance.

Been back on keto sense October and it’s been really good this time. I have managed to get my blood sugars levels down to 46mmol/mol and last weeks results 42mmol/mol Still taking X1 metformin a day and no mention of my cholesterol what was a concern from my doctor last year.
I am about 2.5 kg off my target weight, so still go a little way to go. Just thinking ahead of time, what’s the best way to reintroduce some carbs to maintain the weight without putting to much back on and not spiking the sugars to much. Is it more a case of trail and error until I find the correct balance?

If I was you I would stick to the keto and up your fats. You’ve found something that works for your BG which is omitting most carbs so why would you want to add them back into your lifestyle?

I’m not at my goal weight, probably never will be but I have done low carb for 9 years then another 6 on keto, it’s a way of life. What stalls my weight loss or even makes me gain is when I get a bit too generous with the fats, especially dairy as in cheese, cream & butter. I don’t avoid fats but don’t add a lot either, I just eat a normal amount of fat. Maybe adding more fats in for you would have the same effect

That is definitely an option and I would be happy with that myself. But my concern with that is, last year my doctor was very concerned about my cholesterol levels.

@Loken when I wanted to stop losing weight, I adopted the following approach.

Firstly, I just ate slightly larger portions at mealtimes. That wasn't enough for me.

From there I increased my proteins further, which helped , but to stall the weightloss, in the end I had to add a bit more fat. I wasn't drinking double cream or eating slabs of butter, but choosing fatier cuts of meat and adding a bit of cream to my breakfast yoghurt.

If you are losing weight, it is quite common for your cholesterol levels to go up a bit, as your body sorts itself out, then once stable those levels usually ease back again.

How you approach things is up to you, but there's no need to up the carbs, if you would rather not.

Why reintroduce carbs, that will only put your HbA1c back up? You’ve found a winning formula. I would say to maintain your weight when you reach your happy weight, just eat more of the low carb foods. You may find that you actually don’t have to eat much more. I got my HbA1c down to non diabetic levels within four months of diagnosis, and lost a shed load of weight, that was over 7 years ago and I have never reintroduced more carbs.

Edit for typo
