I’m gonna be brutally honest and say no one shot a day is not ok. Once again it’s the worst thing you can do.
I never drank sugary drinks to begin with, I drank sugar free and still do occasionally, I now drink sparkling water, always took my coffee and tea black no sugar so I had nowhere to go drinks wise, You have because you drink full sugar drinks the small change to sugar free will make a big difference to you.

Food wise I went low carb. Started on 130g carb a day slowly reduced my carbs until I got it down to 20g carb a day and now do full keto, (have done for the last few years) also reduced my meds over time (under my GP) until I got rid of all meds except metformin.

nobody is saying it’s easy, it’s not it’s **** hard especially at the beginning but it does get easier until it becomes the norm. Nobody wants to change but we have to if we want to be as healthy as we can be. It’s early days for you and it can be overwhelming but if you drop those drinks you’re making a good start. You can do this!

Hello mr loving life,

I love your honesty I do realise I need to be good and try so what I have done is brought a book called hairy bikers eat away diabetes type 2.

Think this will help with what foods I can have :)

I think the the doctor and my mum get fustrated with me because I keep saying I will find it hard to change my diet and actually do some exercise.
But I do realise I need to change or the future is bleak.

Thanks for the support and advice.

Hi @Suagrrush39 and welcome to the forums.

I'm going to put the issue with non diet coke a different way.

I'm a T1 diabetic so I have to inject insulin for every single carb I eat. As a child there weren't any diabetic drinks out there (apart from a not particularly nice fruit cordial called Rose's diabetic orange :)). So as a special treat I occasionally used to share a 330ml can of traditional coco cola with my brother. That was 20g from my daily allowance. So if you are drinking just one can a day then that is 40g. That means if you cut out the coke you are cutting out a lot of carbs, without changing your food at all.

But honestly, I agree with the others, if you get a glucometer you'll soon find out how many carbs your body can and can't cope with, it does genuinely very from person to person.

Hopefully your doctor will contact you soon and give you a definite diagnosis. We've all been assuming you are T2 (because that's the most common) but there are other kinds. (And I've been diabetic for 52 years and I still have all my toes :)).

Hello Ellie,

Thanks for taking your time to reach out.
That is way lots of carbs with such a little bit.

So usually Ellie that’s all I drink I can drink 1.5 litres in a day and half.

You have had diabetes a long time so now you are used to eating correctly and drinking? Luckily for you there is a lot more nicer drinks out there for you to drink now, I never had diabetic chocolate before so that will be an experience I suppose :)

I have gone on Amazon and going purchase one from there. One of them machines.

A quick update I went to my doctors yesterday and they informed me I do indeed have type 2 they put me on metformin I did ask for a machine but got denied they said they don’t give them out for type 2 diabetes. They have also sent off for another hb1ac test don’t know why?

Do you have cola now still for a treat?

Do you have any naughty foods now for a treat?

Injecting insulin must not be nice don’t think I could do this everyday so well done for this.

Thanks for your advice.

I drink occasional diet cola, on the grounds that though artificial sweeteners might not be ideal, they are much better for me than sugar, and I can't honestly say it tastes much different to the stuff with sugar.

If I want to have a high carb treat, I can think of much nicer (to me) things than cola.

If I eat sensibly then I can eat pretty much what I like, though I tend to eat moderately lowish carb because I find my insulin easier to manage then. But as a T1 I have the option to inject more if I have more carbs.

1.5L in a day and a half is one litre a day, which is about 100g of carbs. If you swapped that out for something carb free that would immediately make a massive drop in your total carb intake....

It's excellent that you are buying a meter, though, if you test before and 2 hours after you have a meal or a snack (or a drink of coke?) that should tell you a lot about whether your body can cope with that snack.

Good luck.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply again so are artificial sweeteners not good for you? So I could not replace that with sugar? - if so why is it bad for you? The reason I ask is because they market this stuff as good for you?

It’s good you can eat what you want so with you having insulin you can eat what you want and just inject more insulin? So basically you are your pancreas?

So 100g of carbs is not bad? Because I can have 150g a day can’t I so that leaves me with 50 a day I can have

Great advice yes will check them 2 hours before and after too see :)

Thank you Ellie.

I think you have misunderstood me. Many of the T2s on this forum eat less than 100g a day, so having 100g of carbs in a fizzy drink can definitely not be described as a good idea. Different people have different tolerances for carbs so I don't know how many will work for you. My suggestion would be that you drop the full sugar coke.

While artificial sweeteners are regarded as controversial by some people, and I certainly wouldn't recommend them in such huge quantities, I'd argue that they are better for a T2 than a 100g of sugar. I don't know what the rest of your diet is like but I think drinking that quantity of high sugar coke is really not helping you. It's likely to be making your blood sugar go high so you get thirsty and them drink more coke, which then makes things worse....

My first suggestion would be to give up the coke, my second would be to do the blood tests.

Rest of my diet is not good… I eat way too much and everything I eat is wrong.

When I spoken to the doctor he says I eat more than 6 grown men should be eating.

I will follow your advice.

Hello Suagrrush39,

Just wanted to say welcome to the forum.

I also have T2 diabetes and believe me no one wants it be we have it and we have to change the way we live so that we can carry on living. Giving things up is hard but if you really want to do it you can, so give up that sugar and start thinking about portion control, it is in your own interest to do so. so that you don't end up with losing toes, limbs etc

I am trying the low carb diet and although it's only been a few weeks it is making a huge difference to my blood sugar readings. Yes most of us type 2's have to buy our own machines and strips as the NHS don't give them to us now days, but it is one of the best investments I have ever made. I still test just before eating and 2 hours after the first bite, it is amazing how much I am learning from doing that and chicken won't put your numbers up too much. Try to eat things that don't put your numbers up more that 2 ie if before eating your number is say 6.0 then then try to make it go no higher than 8.0

Good luck and remember to update us on how you are doing. :)

Hello,

Thanks for the welcome and support.

Today I have started my new food regime.

So I have hd no coke all day and just had sparkling flavoured water.

I had to fast this morning for bloods but after I had the bloods at 2 I had mackerel cooked in tin foil with 2g of butter with 6 new potatoes and lettuce tomatoes and cucumber.

Feel though I have achieved something today.

Only fish I ever had before was if it was battered from chip shop.

Hi how’s it gone today? I found this site today and I thought you might like it and it may help. It’s a couple who are a chef and cookery book writer who he reversed his T2 with low carb/keto. Lots of nice easy to digest info and some good cookery books. There is also some input from a GP Dr Unwin who is a guru in the low carb/keto world. Take your time to read round it and digest. Don’t rush, get a good understanding of things. Hope it helps :)
