How long after a T2 diagnoisis would you expect to have retinol screening. My husband was diagnosed T2 three months ago but has not had it done yet, also do all T2's see a podiatrist the DN nurse checked his feet but did not say anything about him having to see a podiatrist

Hi Annie

I was diagnosed diabetic officially on August 11, I have had a couple of follow up visits with the DN to monitor my condition and on my 2nd appointment the Nurse requested an appointment with an eye screening clinic for me. My appt is on 29 September. There is no reason why you cannot prompt the DN you see for a referral. With regards to a podiatrist - I understand that this is not necessarily part of the diabetic care. My DN has been trained to inspect feet, although I have not had this service yet. They therefore will not send you to a specialist unless you have a problem they cannot treat or diagnose.

Annie - my impression is it varies from place to place. Taking the two things separately:

Retinal Screening: At my practise, the NHS has a mobile unit that travels around the county, doing retinal checks on site, rather than have their patients travel to the usual locations. For my practise, that means each April/May. I missed those because I was away, but have had it done at the hospital since I got back.

Podiatry: At the point of diagnosis, I was told to self-refer to have my feet checked. There wasn't actually time for me to do that, so I went privately for the first one. When I came back to UK, I did self-refer and had that appointment last Monday. She checked my feet (in exactly the same way as the practise nurse did) and discharged me, considering I have no on-going need.

Other people find other things, so maybe call the surgery and ask?

Thanks for your replies he goes for his 3 month blood test next week and will see the DN a week after that so he will ask then about the retinal screening
