Hi, i dont personally have diabetes, i am here on account of my dad. He is a type 2 diabetic who takes metformin (and some medication for high blood pressure although i am not sure what medication). I know that he doesnt regularly take his metformin. At about 2pm this afternoon, i saw my dad and he was shaking really badly. We assumed this was due to hypoglycaemia and gave him a sugary drink, a banana and i believe my brother took him to Tesco to get jelly babies. Since then, he and my brother went to see a family friend. hes been shaking all day. he claims that he is cold which i believe also can be linked to hypoglycaemia? Theyve been out all day and my dad didnt bring his blood sugar monitor with him so we arent sure what his blood glucose levels are. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is normal that he has been shaking all day or whether we should take him to A&E? any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and welcome to the forum and i’m sorry your Dad is poorly. Type 2 diabetics on Metformin wouldn’t generally become hypo. I think if you remain worried about him you could ring 111 for advice, or if he becomes seriously unwell then a trip to A/E might be wise.

As a T1 who regularly suffers from hypoglycemia I urge you to seek medical advice. I wouldn't expect a hypo to continue all day, specially if treated with sugar, and I agree with @Rachox that metformin doesn't normally cause hypos.

I would be surprised if he has a hypo on metformin or with missing a dose.
However, if he forgets his monitor perhaps the family can hold spares in future, the meter is fairly cheap, it's the test strips that are expensive if testing frequently.
If you haven't done so already call 111 for advice?

For me that amount of sugar would trigger a large blood sugar rise with symptoms.

Before giving him any carbs you should've tested his bloods with a blood glucose meter. I wouldn't have expected your Dad on Metformin to go that low tbh also the carbs you gave him would have been in danger of making him hyper- ie too much sugar in the blood rather than hypo glaecemic. He needs to be checked out- that's for sure and in future keep his monitor with him all the time is my advice
