Should I lie?

I was diagnosed as T2 just before Christmas and fortunately came across this forum mid January. Since this time I have been following a LCHF diet, ditching the advice from the diabetic nurse about eating 'good' carbs with every meal. I have lost 8kg to date and did my first BS testing this morning which was 5.3 before breakfast then 6.0 2 hours later which I'm thinking is ok? I have just had an appointment through with the dietician in April and have to fill in a food diary for the 3 days before. Should I fill it in honestly ie with LCHF foods that I'm eating or fill in what they want to see? Don't want the hassle of a lecture!

Thanks to all the brilliant posters on this site, your advice has been really helpful at the start of my journey.

Fill it in honestly and see what their reaction is, good luck.

I agree with Noblehead. You've lost weight and your bg levels are good. What is there to lecture you about?

Hi! I told my DN from the first visit I wouldn't be eating as per the NHS diet sheet, she had a face like a smacked backside, told me there was no way she could agree with how I planned to eat, but on my return visit said " I don't agree with how you are eating but I can't argue with the results" - BG very accceptable, BP down, weight melting off - so go ahead and be truthful , it's YOUR life - literally ! Good luck :)

Fill it in honestly, but don't be surprised if the dietician doesn't agree and makes suggestions that you are not happy with doing. They have to give the current advice, and can't deviate from that no matter how good your results are.

If you can't be bothered to argue the toss, just do the "Nodding Dog" thing, and " Uh huh ..." , smile, and leave, then carry on ;).

I'm with @noblehead

Honesty is always the best policy.

How can anyone possibly lecture you when you have examples of excellent Blood Glucose control like you gave in your post?

I'd be tempted to include the pre and post prandial blood glucose test results alongside the entries in that diary.

The NHS is "evidence based" and you're just providing it.

I'm sure it would be very hard to argue against.

At the end of the day it's your body and your choice what you do with it - not theirs.

Have fun! ;)

I completely agree here.

You are achieving the desired results. She will likely advise upping the carbs, you can either argue the toss, and ask her to make her case, in the light of your evidence, or tell her you'll consider doing as she suggests, but will monitor your results very closely along the way. I would think you'll be discharged after the initial appointment to be honest, but I could be very wrong.

Playing devils advocate here if you feel you have to lie, why are you going to the apt if you have the results your require in the first place?
Seems a dreadful waste of your time and the dieticians as well.

I've said this before on the forum that I never advise anyone to see an NHS dietician. It appears to normally be a waste of time and NHS money. If people stopped using this service it might stop or the advice might even be revised to help rather than hinder diabetics.

Then again many have had very good experiences, so to tar every dietician with the same brush is hardly fair is it? If you go with a closed mind then you do not benefit and that's the same with any apt or meeting in life. :)

Be honest & if a lecture comes from it just be honest & tell them that your weight is down & bloods good & if they go on about the fats just say to them, that it's obvious you don't follow the media or know of Dr Trudi Deakin.
The way I see it is the more of us that nicely tell them that unless they have the condition how do they know what works best, cause from things I've read their way don't work.

I had great advice from both dietitians and diabetes specialist nurses, they all talked about lowering carbs and being aware of what carbs do to our bs, tell the truth you may be pleasantly surprised- there are some forward thinking HCPs around

I refuse to see the diabetics nurse at my surgery after she ridiculed me for trying to explain what GL was.
No you mean GI she kept butting in.
She had never heard of GL even though it's been around a good few years.
This was two years ago.
I now see an all round kind of nurse at the surgery for my once a year thingymebobs and my GP.
They are seeing the results of LCHF and the other week my GP said she now thinks low carb is the way forward for dibetics but is holding back just now on the high fat.
The only diabetic doing well at a very large practice is me .... the guy who refuses to have anything to do with the diabetics nurse.

Hi @Mongolia, Don't think there is anyway that you should lie, maybe if you don't want any confrontation then maybe follow @CarbsRok advice and don't go.

For me, when I went to my Doc's, (we don't get the chance of dietitian here) I had a photo copy of the front of Trudi Deakins new book 'EAT FAT'. He didn't ask, as when he looked at my results he didn't really want to know, as to whatever I was doing, as far as he was concerned it was working.

I made a point of telling him though, exactly what I was doing and that I was extremely disapointed with the DESMOND course he had sent me on, and then told him and all about the book, he just smiled and shrugged his shoulders and said carry on, adding in moderation.

Thank you all for your helpful advice. Maybe I'll be lucky and the dietician will be forward thinking and know all about the benefits of LCHF. Will fill it in honestly and see what happens. I'll be seeing the DN at the end of March for first HbAc1 since diagnosis so hopefully will be able to take good results with me.

I would cancel the appointment. You clearly don't need it, having worked out the answer for yourself. The NHS is supposedly stretched, let someone else have the slot.

Honesty is your best policy .
Plus you will feel better for it too .
You do what you need to do, no matter the circumstances. Being true to yourself is #1 and aligning that to everyone else (#2) and you have it made. :)

Good luck at your appointment, you are doing well. The majority of members would agree to carry on doing what you are doing as it is working so well for you. If we lie about things, how are people and establishments going to 'change their 'views and recommendations ' because a lie will tick their boxes and then they will be thinking, 'that's another one who is following the guide lines and getting fab results' it will become a vicious circle. Definitely honesty is the best policy as it may not be as bad as you think ;) :)

All the best RRB
