Hello all,

I have always drunk a lot of water but lately have a real unsatisfied thirst with my mouth being constantly dry. As a result I wee a couple of times during the night when I never used to.

My father has been diabetic for over 25 years which I believe was brought on by trauma (he was in a bomb blast ). He tested my blood twice tonight - once before we went out for a meal which was 13.9 and then a couple of hours after and if was over 21. His was 6 and 17 respectively.

I have previously been healthy although have annoyed a pretty wild life in my early years. I'm now 42 and overweight, having been extremely stressed over the last few years running my own business.

I have also lost over 1stone (6kg) in the last month although I have been more active while still eating junk.

I guess I know the answer to my own question, but wondered if there may be another reason for high level without it being diabetes or are these all the classic symptoms ?

Also , 21 - I guess this is really bad? :( if so....how bad please or am I worrying a bit prematurely?

Many thanks

You answered yourrself to know and get sorted or to realise and run away.
And knowing is no biggie if you adjust your life you have seen what all us maladjusted reprobates get up to here...hardly held back for the most part.
l would say that your dad needs sorting aas well though at 17 so you may as well both join in here.
Make a dr appointment asap and start reading up here how to get sorted. lt isnt that hard.
:-)

You have probably been higer lately without knowing so tomorrow eat lightly no bread spuds pasta sugar or sweets etc just eat some fish and eggs and dark veg or salad cheese.
make an appointment monday as emergency not cause you about to keel over yet but only cause stress of worry wont help :-)

Yes. You need to see your GP

And I agree with Mud, your dads readings 2 hours after a meal are double what they should be.

Think about weight loss, changing what you eating and cutting back sugar and carbohydrates (which turn into sugars)

If you want some help with food choices, type up a few of your meals and we can suggest ways to make them better.

Report back how you get on

Good Luck

Please see your GP sooner rather than later. Don't panic (easier said than done I know) but the sooner you see someone the sooner they can advise you or diagnose you.

I was unaware I had type 1 diabetes and seen an out of hours doctor for an unrelated issue but it turned out not only did I have blood glucose levels of 24 and 28 I also had very high Ketones and sugar in my water sample :arghh: the only symptom I had was feeling more tired than usual and a bit of weight loss both of which I just put down to having a 7 month old baby and exercising more.

Don't ignore that nagging in the back of your head.

Thanks for the replies and info.

After a (sleepless) night I measured myself this morning and it's 10.1 before anything to eat or drink.

My biggest fear is injections. Which is pretty ironic as I used to be a bit of an adrenaline junkie and liked fear. I know it's an irrational fear and only in the mind, but if confirmed and I require injections I will probably be visiting a hypnotherapist first!

When my dad was first diagnosed many years ago he was given Glibenclamide tablets to take daily before moving onto injections. And I heard about a pen that shoots medication through the skin using air....? Any idea if this is available?

That would certainly take away the biggest fear.

I'll be making an appointment tomorrow ...

Wow you really do waste time worrying don't you. If type 2 you will probably go onto tablets. However in your case you have spent so much time worrying it may be worth asking for injections so all that worrying wasn't a waste of time ....:woot::hilarious:

(Sorry but the above was to good to resist!)

Hi deffo see yr Gp asap..... if you are D, you may well be ok with adjusting yr diet and eating far less of the stuff that contains a lot of carb, and doing some gentle exercise like walking which lowers bg levels.

Ha!

Yes, I really do worry about injections! Childhood trauma and all that ....

I cut a wart off my thumb with scissors once and that didn't bother me, but seeing a needle makes me feel sick and my legs go weak :s

If I can get away with changing my diet and lifestyle without injections then I'll consider it a positive!

What determines whether you go on injections or can take tablets? Is it the severity of it or other health factors? Do most people take tablets first then?

Lots of questions ;)

You can try to control your numbers with diet, exercise and weight loss as a trial

But don't forget to help to get your fathers levels lower too.

start thinking about your food choices

Most of us Type 2 take tablets. A Type 2 can progress onto injections l am not sure of the full mechanics of this l am sure others can help however as most of us start on tablets concentrate on staying under proper control with diet and exercise and all being well with luck and a following wind you shouldn't need to go onto injections only a small % do.

Type 1 do not produce either enough insulin or any so they need injections.

There are other forms of diabetes which others can explain or you can peruse the forums but the vast majority are type 1 or 2.

Thank you for all your replies and info.

Lack of understanding causes most fear and as I read more about it the less stress I feel.

I'll be back with more questions soon no doubt. :D

Hi. As others have said the low-carb diet will get your weight and blood sugar down. You will then be in a position to judge whether you have diabetes (probably) but also what the level of your condition is. Having reduced weight you may be put onto Tablets if your sugar is still too high and if after three level tablets you still have an HBa1C above 7.5% then insulin my be prescribed. Hopefully this is years away for you. Don't worry about the insulin. It is painless compared with finger-pricks. Typically the needle is 4mm long and very thin; a big change from years ago. BTW blood sugar in the 20s is not dangerously bad but does need attention from the GP as soon as possible and will be doing damage. Just reduce the carbs and have plenty of water.

Busta, I think you are diabetic by the sounds of things. Blood sugars of 13 and 21 are diabetic readings. You have asked a question if you have diabetes so I think you are ready for the answer. I doubt there is any other reason that would cause you to be so high. Do go to your Dr as soon as you can. Dont leave it. The sooner you sart treatment, the better you will feel and life with diabetes is not as bad as everyone may think. Its tough at times but if you stick to a routine and keep testing and taking your medications, you will be fine and live a normal life.
Im sorry for you.
And your dad need to go low carb by the sounds of it because 17 is very high. Readings this high will cause complications.
