I was diagnosed ni February after OGTT of 13.8 at two hours. I have been lowcarbing for some years but since diagnosis I have been strict and cut out all grain and starchy roots. There isn't much more I can cut down on. My bg usually is in the normal range but as soon as something happens, for example if I don't sleep well bg goes up. My GP wants me to go on metformin but I am reluctant to do this as I am not convinced it will help me.
I want him to look into if I am insulin resistant at all first. I have also read that metformin is used mostly when you are over weight and have problems with high fasting bg. Isn't high fasting bg a sign of insulin resistance? My readings have gone from around 4 to around 5.5-6 in five years or so but so far I have never had a reading above 6.2.
Thing is I have slowly lost weight over the past years. It could of course be due to a low carb diet, or that I started meds for hypothyroidism two years ago, but this moderate weight loss doesn't indicate insulin resistance, does it? Come to think of it, the weight loss over the last five years has been considerable or 20%.
I also lack most markers of the metabolic syndrome apart from slightly too large belly.
What do you think? Should I try metformin and see where it takes me, or should I keep insisting GP checks whether I am insulin resistant or lack insulin? Dad and all his siblings had diabetes, as had their mum and all her siblings so there seem there are genes involved. My GP says that as I am fifty MODY is ruled out.
