Slightly increasing carbs & better BS?

I went very LC (usually <50 g /day) when I was diagnosed with prediabetes. This initially worked well, and then worked a little less well, and then I got metformin, which helped BS.

So recently I've been experimenting, for some reason my readings seem to be better on days when I have some more carbs (better with sugars than starches). I'm still what most would consider low carb but maybe up to 100g/day on some days. This makes no sense to me. Can anyone offer an explanation? Thanks.

Perfect sense and agrees with all long thread I created 2 years ago. When you go very low carb your body automatically increases it own insulin resistance to retain the glucose for those things it really needs it for and hence you fat burn. Now you have increased your carb intake it has reduced the natural insulin resistance

OMG! I just went on very low carb diet to loose weight...is the insulin resistance reversable? Will that be not bad for me?

If you continue to low carb, then yes!
And no that will be very good for you.

Have a read of the information on insulin resistance on the home page.
Maybe a mod can give you the link!

Oh, thank you SunnyExpat and AndCol! This has been quite confusing to me, and the dietitian I saw was absolutely no help at all with any of this. Really glad I'm not just a freak of nature and this trend I'm seeing makes sense. I'll try upping my daily carbs a little bit and see how it goes.

There is no real need if you are comfortable with the level of carbs you are currently consuming.

What is your BG range, and what target are you aiming for?

I like to keep the BG in the 4's and 5's at random tests, and ideally under 6 fasting--all of which I could initially do with the very LC diet, but has crept up over the months. 4's were totally gone for quite a while, until this experiment brought them back, so I'm going to keep experimenting to see what's what. Bread is definitely bad (raised rather than lowered postprandial) but a small amount of fruit (tried blueberries today) or salty liquorice seems to be good. At least, so far--we shall see. I fear it might be making me more tired, which could mean spikes I'm missing with my meter, but I've had other reason to be tired too this weekend, so we'll see what lasts.
