Slurred Speech??!

Hello everyone!

I'm a new member here..thought I'd give it a try and join the family lol!

So...I have been living with T1D for over 15 years and I'm now 23. Over the last two years I have started to notice that once in a while (maybe 2-3+ times a month) I randomly start to slur in my speech? I know this can be caused as a sign of hypoglycaemia, however, at times when I have experienced slurred speech, my glucose levels have been normal if anything, a little bit higher then my target levels. E.g. 12.5 instead of 8.0 (during the day).

So I was just wondering...has anyone else experienced this issue before and know the main cause? Is it something I should be worried about and see a doctor as I have been avoiding to seek help regarding this issue and thought i should be fine

Slurred speech shouldn't have to do anyting with your bg when it is 12.5. I would ask you gp about it.
Off topic, is there a specific reason why your target level during the day is 8.0?

Yes, I agree with the others. Go to your GP as soon as possible.

Hello @Mario5y7 Welcome to the forum, I haven't come across this before, as others have said it's best to get checked out by your GP.

Welcome! I agree with the other suggestions to consult a doctor. If it is diabetes related (unlikely) here are some things to consider:
-does it occur after a hypo? I know you said you were at 12, but was this because of a rebound from a low? Sometimes you can have side effects some time after the hypo, although this is unlikely since slurred speech is a consequence of extremely low blood sugar and the "After effects" are usually things like tiredness, headaches, anxiety which are more minor.
-is your blood sugar on its way down very quickly? Again unlikely since you started at a pretty high number
-do you have any other conditions that could be causing/exacerbating this?
-are you having lows that you don't know about, or poor hypo awareness?

No, there's no specific reason but I follow the DAFNE guidelines.

I didn't follow DAFNE, but does this mean you aim to be 8 or does it mean you aim to be below 8? The last makes more sense to me, it's what I try as well.
How's the slurred speech?

Slurred speech can be a symptom of hypothyroidism which often co-occurs with T1. You should have a blood test. And don't worry about it. I've had it for 42 years (diabetes for 50) and its just a small tablet every day. (I never understand why people whinge about such small things! They should try diabetes for size!)

Totally agree! So many people act like having to take tablets is the end of the world, or that not having to take medication is some sort of achievement. And even if they agree to take medication they "forget" or just ignore doctor's orders.

Hope you are okay and would ask to ask the gp to do some blood test as slurred speech isn’t good however if you don’t have any other weaakness then you have nothing to lose just check it’s not a small TIA

I positively hate taking tablets. Especially the ones you have to take every day, I'm not really bothered by taking a paracetamol when something hurts me. I took some pains to get switched from daily vitamin D tablets to monthly capsules.

I never understand why people whinge about such small things!

Too bad you don't understand, but it's all about how you feel about something. I feel awful about having to take a tablet every day. I usually don't whinge about it though.

I do monthly vitamin D too. I am very bad at taking tablets/capsules so I just break them open and swallow the powder inside! So I understand why people might struggle with the physical process of actually taking them since I am not so good at it myself. But if I understand correctly you are more concerned about having to do it all the time rather than the size of the tablet? Do you find it more difficult than injections? Or both equally annoying to do?

For me it's purely psychological. I'm not sure why I hate it so much, never really thought about it until I read the post about people whinging about taking tablets and it felt kinda personal. Maybe it has something to do with feeling old, or a failure, nightmares about having to line up a row of tablets next to my plate with every meal (I only take one little blood pressure pill before bed).
I guess it's the same irrational feeling I had when I was 14 and my mother needed hearing aids. That made me very angry and sad as well; not the deafness but the hearing aids. So I guess I'm just a little strange, nothing I can't live with .

I don't mind injections at all. I like to keep my bg as well as I can, and for me that means injecting little but often, an average of about 8 times a day. Completely happy with that, which possibly makes me even weirder .

Hi, I’m a new member too. I’ve been type one for over thirty years. I have been suffering from this random slurred speech for about three years or more and when I’ve checked my blood I haven’t been hypo either. I find it awful and embarrassing, I also have a terrible time remembering things, and the correct words while I’m talking too.. which I have to say drives me crazy ... I have also just this past year started to begin conversations and then just stop half way through them and stare into space as if lost ... not good and driving everyone around me totally nuts .

I have for numerous years thought it was to do with bad BG control .. but got no confirmation from doctors, diabetologists or neurologists for that matter...they all said there was no link. I am however convinced that this is the cause... by the way I have a auto immune thyroid problem although I don’t yet need to take tablets.

Don’t really know what to advise apart from seeing a doctor or a few different specialists... I just wanted you to know that you weren’t alone.
