So frustrated and tired

Since diagnosis I have manged to get a really good grip on my BG's. I was actually shocked that simply by reducing carbs it made such a difference, and also how easy it was to maintain good figures. Calories have been a real problem, I always felt like it was a huge success if I managed 500 a day. However, I started to feel better, and the fatigue, fuzzy head and most importantly the very bad swelling in my ankles went. The last few days have been hell! No change in my eating, still very low carbs, yet my BG is all over from an average of middle to high fives, to very low 6's. Now my BG is anything from 5.3 to 7.7 even an 8. I have never had such large swings, the fatigue is back really badly. I have started taking Cod liver oil capsules to help boost the minute amounts of Vit D my doctor prescribed, yet after one day of feeling much better, I now feel awful. I eat a lot of fish (sea bass tonight) meat (a lot of chicken, and also turkey added to this weeks shop) loads of veg and salad, I also always have berry's frozen and fresh for snacks and light meals. I keep a very detailed food diary, as well as a very detailed BG and Carb record. What's happening to me? I feel exhausted, stressed, and so frustrated.

Can anyone offer any explanation why this is happening? A woman I know who is also diabetic and isn't at all interested in keeping healthy and eats what she wants said as a newly diagnosed diabetic what did I expect? Well, after learning what I can and can't eat, I certainly didn't expect this slide back. I know some would say that I am worrying over nothing, but I don't see high 7's and 8's as needless worry, when I have been so much better controlled. Please help.

Just a quick thought, could I need to up my carbs slightly? I don't really want to do this as ULC has always worked for me.

At one point I hit a sort of "wall". I kept crying and I felt like poo... It passed after a few days but it wasn't fun.

It may be something as simple as an approaching cold. Don't change anything otherwise you won't know what it is if it gets better (it's bound to).

I'm another VLC-ber, have been for a loooong time and sometimes, things are just what they are.

So Def, I take it from the other threads that you are now eating a proper sustainable diet. Well done, that in itself is a huge step considering where you came from a couple of weeks ago.

It's one thing getting 5s and 6s on a near starvation diet, and another getting 7s and 8s on a proper diet. Are we talking about an 8 @ 2 hours or are you measuring the size of your spike? Even if those numbers aren't as good as you were getting last week, they are still better than the vast majority of T2s ever get.

I think you've put your body under a great deal of stress in the last few weeks so it's not surprising that there is some reaction. My advice is to be patient and see if you can weather this bad patch. If you think that eating a few more carbs will make you feel better than do it. T2 Diabetes is a learning exercise. You've already done most of the hard bit, but you still have a bit of discovery to do.

Keep up the good work Mrs D!

Stephen

Thank you both. Glados, I'm like you, I feel teary and SOOO tired. Wiflib, I don't feel as if I have a cold or anything 'buggy' about to strike. I think I might go and put a chicken in the oven and roast it, and make your lovely comforting chicken and leek soup for tomorrow. One other thing, again for the first time I am having really bad cravings, I long for fish shop fish and chips, and have done for a few days. I wonder could this be related? Suddenly out the blue craving carbs?

Hi Stephen, sadly no, the calories have not changed an awful lot. They are a little better.

Yesterday 627
Sunday 961
Saturday 735
Friday 775
Thursday 667
Wednesday 615

Today so far - 263

My highest carbs ever were 40g usually they are around 11 - 29 with 5g on Sunday.

The 8 was after 2 hours, they are never that high, but when I look at my BG graph I can see they are much higher then they have been before at all testing times.

So you are doing a little better. You're about on par with someone on the Newcastle diet. It's probably not that surprising that you're exhausted.

When are you going to see the Doc next to get on that SR?

You do realise that we all get funny spikes from time-to-time? If you're blood is always less than 6mmol/l, then we'll throw you out of our club

I see the nurse for bloods a week on Monday and the GP a week after. He said that I would be fine for a while, but if it got worse to see him. As things did seem to be getting better I decided to leave it. If I can just shake of the fatigue I know I will feel better. Ironically, when my calories were 300 - 400 a day I felt better than I do now. There is just no rhyme or reason for any of it. Nothing follows a simple path.

I would just sit in the corner and sulk until you invited me back

Defren. I'm going to sound like my DSN

Stop your testing!

Had the same thing over the weekend. BG's went up and up hit an 8 and God knows you know I'm more anal about them than you!

Came to the conclusion my BG's were rising because the stress of getting a bad reading was causing the next one to be worse. I stopped testing for a day and a half. Unheard of for me. My poor spreadsheet is bereft. Sunday evening I then had a nice relaxing bath and good dose of gin to chill and just watched the telly but just made sure I didn't eat anything bad then measured just before bed at 5.2. Yesterday they were still a bit elevated but today all back to normal.

Try that. Not testing for a couple of days wont kill you.

Hi Defren, just wondering if you could be iron deficient or vit B12. I started taking B12 and what a difference it made, like within days.
Hope you get sorted soon.

That would be so very hard. I feel by testing at least I have an idea of what is, or what's not going on. I am stressed, a dear friend was rushed into hospital, and as she was in just before Christmas and had a minor heart attack, I know this recent bout is stressing me badly. She is home now, but she is just not right. She has many health issues and I am so worried about her. I promise to try not to test, but it will be unbelievably hard for me.

Hi Dawn I am on Ferrous sulphate 200mg three times a day. I do suffer with anaemia and have done for years and years.

Get some more vitamin D inside you Defren, it will make you feel better. Go back to your doctor and ask for the vitamin D injections, if you can't get these then try http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/ ... =163&sid=0 and take at least 2000 IU a day or http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/ ... =163&sid=0 two squirts a day at least.

I've been there, had the t-shirt, I know how vitamin D deficiency can knock the stuffing out of you and not eating much is making it worse. Life is so different for me now I take supplements.

You're right. I had a day after I added the CLO where I felt amazing, it's all been downhill since then. I will phone the surgery in the morning. I have to accept this can't continue any longer. If I call at 8am I should get an appointment tomorrow. I can't go on, the fuzzy head is coming back, I have the beginning of a headache, things I have not had in weeks. Yes, it has to change - thank you!

After a terrible FBG of 8.5 (I have never ever had such a high reading). I have taken the bull by the horns. I have made a huge pan of wiflib's chicken and leek soup. I have also bought the Vit D 1000 oral spray and a bottle of Vit B12 500ug and started on them all. Feel absolutely terrible, but refuse to give in to this. Off we go again on the diabetes fight!

I may well be talking complete rubbish here but:

On such a small amount of food, is it possible your liver is dumping glucose at irregular times to try and over-compensate for a lack of calories?

Lucy, you could be right. I'm hoping some clever s*d will come along and give us a clue.

Defren, I'm on my over to yours. I'll bring the cream and we can moan about all things that get on our t*ts.

My calories were a lot lower Lucy, yet my BG was stable. It seems that with the increase in calories came an increase in BG levels. Never one to give up, I had a whinge last night, have my fighting head back on now. wiflib's soup I share a huge pan with my daughter, that is 334 calories as I have packed it with chicken and leeks. 11g of carbs so it's 5.5g for my half a pan full. It is so comforting and warming. I love it. The spray should (I hope) also help, I have just had two big sprays. Fingers crossed.

Love your idea wiflib, you can tell me if my soup tastes as good as when you make it
