I avoided the low carb idea for years on here, but as nothing else was working and now on the highest medication he can give me, my GP gave me three months to see if I can get my blood sugars down before putting me on insulin. Well on 28th May I decided to give this low carbing a try, I have not been too strict with it but have not eatent potatoes/rice/pasta have a little bread at the weekend. Nearly instantly my readings went down, I am so pleased. They have gone from 17.s to 20.s now from 6.6 to (at the most 11 but not often). I know this is still not as low as it probably should be but hopefully will get down to the 5's eventually. My three months is up and I am due at nurse tomorrow for blood test etc and get the results next Friday and see my GP then, hopefully he will at least give me another three months to see how things go. I physically have more energy and mentaly feel better, hope this keeps up. I will let you know what my results are next week, I know it is still too soon to tell and they were high over the three months and they take it on average but fingers crossed. :D

That is brilliant Cosy well done. If its blood for an HbA1c test that you're having done next week then don't expect too much as it will be an average over the last three months although some of what you will have done in the three weeks (by then) of low carbing should make a difference. What I'd do is also make sure you can show the doc your meter readings so that he can see all the effort you are putting in. Either write them down or if you have a meter that lets you see old readings just take that along. Good luck and if you are really confident you can continue the new low carb way remember a doctor can only suggest a course of action ....

Cosy - well done on making such a wise decision. I was about to go on insulin at the last moment I found out about low carb. I started off slowly, I was quite anxious I couldn't understand how I could be healthy without the health giving and essential carbohydrates hahaha. My bg levels dropped almost from day one I gradually cut carbs down to no more than 30g a day. I was so encouraged by my meter readings. I also lost my surplus 2st. I am now allowing myself 50g carbs a day. I never have cravings and truly enjoy my food always cooked from scratch. I have not cheated once, not even once.
I know you will succeed because it is your decision to go low carb you weren't forced to do so. If you find yourself struggling come go here we will support and encourage you all the way.
All the best x x

Yes it is the HbA1c xyzzy and I realise what I have done over the last few weeks may not show much improvement but as you have suggested I have been keeping a note of my readings and have the old very high ones to show him. I am only going to the nurse tomorrow and as she is never very sympathetic saying things like 'it is only a matter of time before you have a heart attack or stroke'.......builds a lot of confidence...... I am not going to mention the low carbing to her I will wait till I see my GP the next week as he is a lot more understanding of things. I just want him to give me another chance to control things myself. I know eventually over the years i might need to go on insulin but although I am 62 I still feel I am a bit young and want to enjoy my retirement now. This site is great for helping and although I am not being too strict with the carbs if my sugars go up I will be stricter. I have sent for a low carb receipe book which hopefully will make it interesting :D

So there's the challenge! Go see the doctor next week, then do the low carb thing over the next 3 months and then have a LOVELY time on the next visit to the nurse and explain how you got the brilliant results. It will make you feel great and hopefully help other T2's the nurse then see's in the future. Take it slow a steady so don't try and cut your carbs down too fast as it can be difficult, rather like someone giving up smoking. Also when you cut the carbs down make sure you replace them with other things so you don't get hungry. If you are going to do this you must end up doing something you will be happy with in the long term.

Take care and let us know how you get on.

borofergie - nope, not even once, at first I was too frightened to cheat, I felt that low carb was my one and only chance, and it was. After going in 3 months from an Hb1ac of 10.7 to an Hb1ac of 6.8 and still alive (contrary to some predictions LOL) I didnt dare risk coming off the wagon so to speak, 6.8 spurred me on, but I knew I needed to plod on with this to be lower still for my next Hb1ac. After the 6.8 I celebrated with a huge steak, mushrooms, salad with a yummy dressing and home made ice cream with a raspberry coulis glass of red wine and and not even a quarter of a chip!! Besides after sticking to it for 3 months my cravings had disappeared.

Cosy - I forgot to say that I am not on any medication at all, but I take bitter melon and cinnamon my Hb1ac's are consistently between 4.5 and 5.

Good luck

Yes that is my plan, give me another three months and hopefully things will be a lot better than thye have been over the last few years and I will succeed ! I know it wont be easy and I might have some days where it is hard, but I gave up smoking 13 years ago after a few attempts so I know I have it in me. So far I have not been hungry at all before dinner tonight it was 6.6 and two hours later 6.6 and I had a nice meal so that suits me. I am going to a wedding on Saturday and will try and be as careful as I can, and I am due to go on holiday for two weeks in July - that I am not sure about - will do my best. I am also doing a lot of walking so think that helps. Will keep you posted and hope its good news, thanks to everyone on here :D

Cosy - I found that most cafes and restaurants are very helpful. If there is nothing sutable for low carb on the menu they are always willing ot offer an omelette plus salad esp if I explain that I am allergic to the carby starchy food. Its the truth, my body cant deal with carbs!!
I have been to, dare say it, to a burger joint and to doner take away, and asked for the double whopper without the bun and the kebab without the bread, I have travelled abroad eg Greece and lived on lovely grilled fish and mountains of fresh veggies and cheese, my mouth is watering at the thought of it.
Enjoy your holiday :)

Back from nurse blood taken results next week, but urine just a trace of sugar, blood pressure 129/79 which is down from last time and weight 6lb down since last time so looking good so far. Going to north of Spain to place we go to every year plenty of fish but the breakfasts in the hotel are the problem some lovely cakes etc.......I WILL BE GOOD - I WILL BE GOOD ...........lol.

Well done on the decision, bp, weight loss, bg drops - have I missed anything

Just bloody well done.
