Hi All,

After a bit of brain storming :)

I've recently found that my levels have gone very unpredicatble for example yesterday I woke at 7.9 had my 2.2CP breakfast and 5.5 units to cover it (1 unit about 15 minutes before eating to try and stop the spike). Felt rough when I got to work and did a check - 2.6 proceded to eat glucose tablets etc and eventually got my levels back up again (it was one of those where it takes ages to get out of - like you've got way too much insulin in your system) - this isn't the first time that I've dropped a lot after breakfast so decided to drop my ratios a bit;

This morning I woke up at 9.5 I had the same 2.2 CP breakfast with 5.5 (0.5 correction as I was a bit warey of going low on the way to work again with driving). Leave it the 4 hours and do a check and ... 10.7 so actualy gone up (I have corrected this now).

This is just an example I often find that my levels are really really unpredictable. I know every day is different but I'm talking about from in the 2's / 3's to 14 /15 when eating the exact same thing injecting the same amount of insulin (basal and bolus) and doing the same activity levels.

I don't think it's duff pens as I can have both high and low days on the same pen. I'm not particularly ill / stressed. My weight isn't fluctuating and I'm eating exactly the same thing every breakfast and lunch, which is very boring!

I suppose it could be injection sites but I move them around and can't spot / feel any lumps.

I've got a hospital appointment in January and am going to mention it to them then if it's not settled down but I just wondering if I was missing anything obvious?

Thanks!

Could it still be erratic honeymoon insulin?

If not, did you do anything different when you went low eg shower at a different time? Silly as it might sound, I find mistiming my morning shower can make a big difference to my results.

Also, if you inadvertently catch a muscle or similar, that can affect absorption.

As you've said this has started recently, have you done a basal check? Are you under any stress at all? Any changes at all?

No not honeymoon (just half way through my 32nd diabetic year :))

No don't think it's the shower either I tend to shower in the evenings... It could be muscle I'm pretty thin I would think it would hurt a lot more injecting into muscle though? I don;t remember yesterdays injection as being particularly painful...

It is recent that it's causing this many problems but my levels have always been pretty volatile if I'm honest (although on average not that bad).

Not done a basal check to be honest, I can't really do much with my basal injections as if I up it from what I'm on now I go low during the night and if I drop it I run really high in the day). Might be worth doing anyway just to see what happens, my other thought was to delay breakfast until I got to work, at least that way I won;t be risking going low whilst driving!

Cheers

One thing I have noticed as type 2 diabetic , is that my blood sugars react completely differently if my body is in ketosis mode.
there is a lot more variability when I am not registering any ketones on a keytone meter even if I eat exactly the same thing a the day before when I was at say 0.8 level of ketosis.

It might be worth checking if you are coming in and out of ketosis depending on how much you ate for dinner the night before . i have no idea if this is relevant for a type 1 diabetic but I thought worth mentioning

on-call do a blood ketone meter which is fairly cheap on amazon.

Honeymooning in your 32nd diabetic year - now theres a thing!

What insulins are you using?

I know! it does feel like honeymoon sometimes!

I'm on Tresiba for basal and apidra for bolus (I have tried novorapid a few times but just spiked like crazy on it).

I'm beginning to think it could be injecting into muscle... I was 6.7 before lunch at 1pm, had 3.1 CP for lunch and slightly undercut my 2:1 ratio with 6 units 1 I had 15 minutes before the rest were straight before I ate, just felt a bit odd did a blood check and 2.9 (@ 2pm) so it's either my correction dose and my lunch bolus colliding or there's something else funky going on!

Matt

Edited to add that I have done a little bit of walking around lunchtime but I do mean a little - just walked to the other side of the company and back so 5 minutes walk and 5 flights of stairs but nothing to raise the heart rate or anything..

It does sound like the rate in which your insulin absorbs varies from day to day pointing to lipo issues @staffsmatt (just my opinion).

Just to fiish the story off, after 3 glucose tablets and then 1 rich tea biscuit when I'd come back to 5 (libre had straight down arrow at the 2.9 reading so didn't want to risk it) I am now back at 10.3 and mightily annoyed!

yesterday someone else on tresiba asked if anyone else was having issues - I'll see if I can find the thread.
