Soda bread...

You could always try making it by hand first to see if you like it before buying a bread machine. If you do decide to buy one have alook on gumtree or similar sites as people often sell them secondhand.

Good idea,I can have a little work out while doing my kneeling.:D.Now back to finding the recipe...

@Russ
Is this the rye bread that looks black and is sliced quite thinly ? I have tried this, very difficult indeed.
Or is it the rye bread that looks white/creamy ?

Polish bread had this style.

Rye bread comes in different forms, some light and some heavy. Pumpernikel is heavy and dense. It is also called black bread. It comes in thin slices and is very filling. It's very nice with toppings such as a mild cheese. Some people might find it a bit worthy, as with even the lighter forms. Most supermarkets sell it.

Soda bread is white and has a fluffy consistency and taste not unlike a bun or even a cake.

I'm not fussed on cakes or buns. Never Have been.
Soda bread? Probably the best bread in the world!
Only eat it now as a rare treat; toasted, with two fried eggs on top.
Will almost certainly pump up the volume, spike, raise the old sugar gear!

Northern irish person here... a soda farrel normally comes in around 50 carbs. i try to avoid them to be honest. they cause high spikes and also seem to release for a long time. more trouble than their worth

Soda farls, like soda bread taste and texture are great but so bad for spikes. Such a shame as I was brought up on them. Will be sorely missed.

My Irish soda bread bread is brown and so yummy, but I defo can't eat it no more...I will try the black bread, but will wait till I get my sugar back down,as someone said earlier,it's early days for me,3 weeks diagnosed,I won't be touching bread for a while, but when I do get sugar back down, will I be able to introduce bread back into my diet...I have got my sugar down from 10.2 to 5.6 and up to 7.6...Still all new to this...xox

Black bread is very low in carbs and sugars - I think some claim to have no sugars. It's not particularly bready, just seeds clinging together. Look at the label when you're next shopping.

My main meal last night included the carbs from spaghetti followed by a thick slice of homemade wholemeal bread and butter and peanut butter. However, for the first time, I took 3 vinegar tablets before eating and 1000mg Metformin after. That took my BS to 7.8. I had two more vinegar tablets and my fasting BS this morning was 4.8. The reason for getting the vinegar tablets was because I recently began enjoying pickled vegetables and the mild vinegar in that was making a big difference, so I got the tablets yesterday and they seem to have worked well.

Never heard of them Russ,I will look out for them, and does your homemade bread spike you high...and is it easy to make...ty

The Apple Cider Vinegar tablets are available from many health shops, like Holland and Barrett (currently on offer). You can also buy bottles of vinegar and honey which does the same job, but not to everyone's taste. I am pleased at how well the tablets worked. Anything high in carbs will cause me to spike, but the lower it s GI (the slower it passes through) the less the impact on my BS. I make bread in a bread maker that I got from Lakeland. It was recommended by Which? and is especially good because you can make small loaves in it. Making a large loaf for one means you you may not eat it all before it goes stale (no preservatives) and you can experiment a bit to find out what you like.

Soda bread isn't made in bread machines as there's no point, because the bread doesn't have ferment and 'develop'
