I'm too scared to go to sleep atm...my sugars keep dropping. Today before lunch my bg was 13...u had a chicken pitta with a small helping of mash and injected 8 units. Checked three hours later and bg was 18!?!?!? (I have the start of a cold). Had a snack during work, raspberry and coconut slice, and did seven units. Two hours later my bg was 5, so I had my dinner of vegetable soup and a yogurt, no insulin as I was aware of the correction. An hour and a half later bg was 2.7!? Had 250-300 ml of orange juice and a quater tub of Ben and Kerry's cookie dough. My bg went up to 8 now it is dropping again!!!! I had a terrible night time hypo last year which resulted in intravenous glucose to actually bring me round and I'm terrified of this happening again. Why am I dipping low despite eating!?!?

It sounds as if your basal and bolus are out of kilter.

You need to get an urgent appointment with your healthcare team. Give them a phone this morning.

In the meantime log all your results, insulin and all your food and all exercise everyday.

Try to do some fasting tests but stop if your bloods go under 4.5 or above 8. Test every hour whilst basal testing.

I hope that you managed to get some sleep, sorry I have only just seen this.

It could possibly be a lot of high sugar carbs that can cause big spikes and then your body needs to get it down quickly, could be a bit of a yoyo affect. I can't eat what I like and so I have to be careful. I'm like you, there have been times I can have a back log of Insulin still in my system. Best to have a word with your diabetic team as well for some advice. Good luck, I hope you are feeling more settled today.

Best wishes RRB

It takes time to get used to bolus bssal regimes........lots of hypos and highs as well until the correct carb ratios can be found for each meal and getting the basal to play ball with the bolus which can be found by trying vsrious ways. Doing bg tests every 2hrs and keeping to eating the same amount of carb for each main meal is a good way and this is what I ended up doing initially to get the correct carb ratio so that when I tested, my bg levels stayed within good targets so that I wasnt going very low or very high.

You will get there with it all.....get a bg diary and write evrrythinh down including the carb etc. Also, have a look at the BDEC Website and google the 100 rule to find a safe correction factor instead of maybe using guesswork

Hi. Can you let us know your BMI. I'm wondering whether you have excess weight and hence insulin resistance. With insulin this can cause unpredictable swings as your body already has too much natural insulin if overweight. Your carbs appear quite high? I would reduce them and if you have excess weight this should fade and you should have better control. I agree with the others that your Basal may need balancing, but note that with any weight loss it will need to be re-balanced down. Apologies if you don't have excess weight; just guessing!

Start off by doing some basal testing, if you don't get the basal dose right you will always be chasing your tail with regards to high and low bg levels, the following has a good explanation on how to conduct the tests:

As for the cake you ate and the 7 units of insulin, when you eat a treat like this it has a tendency to raise bg levels immediately but can send them crashing down a few hours later as the insulin can be active for up to 4-5 hours, although QA insulin peaks around 90 mins after injecting. So if you fancy the odd treat like this then you better off having it after a main meal, although you still need to take the carb content of the item into consideration when working out your meal-time dose.
