Type of diabetes
Type 2
Treatment type
Tablets (oral)
So I had my first ever flu jab on Friday.

I live in a small village and was basically accosted by the pharmacist when I went in and before I knew it I was sat having it

I read it was advised for diabetics so it wasn’t an issue. Also should make clear I’m type 2 and was diagnosed in February. HBA1C has gone from 69, down to 46 and has been that number for the last two blood tests.

Anyway since the jab I have been a bit sniffly, sneezy and tired. Not feeling 100%.
I woke up this morning feeling yuck so tested and I was at a 10! So washed hands and re tested and it showed a 9. I usually am about a 6.
I have only taken paracetamol and nothing else.

Do colds and flu have a tendency to push up your levels?

Hi,

I’m T1, but yes. It can happen… I find myself needing to either increase my basal & or using more corrective bolus insulin.

Hope you recover soon.

Short answer - Yes. Attaching a list I found giving 42 things that people have reported to affect their blood glucose:
https://diatribe.org/42-factors-affect-blood-glucose-surprising-update

Personally I expect my BG to be 1-2mmol/l higher thar usual when I'm ill. My system also seems to know when when I'm about to be ill, as well, and I'll usually see higher readings a day or two before symptoms appear.

And well done on your a1C reduction.

Congratulations on lowering your HbA1c results.

I seem to recall, my blood glucose readings rose slightly following some past flu vaccinations, but by no means all. The effect lasted 2-3 days. This year, my blood glucose readings were not affected at all, but we're all different.

Hug for feeling rough,
But high five for the HBA1c lowering..bravo .

Any medication is a personal decision.
So pharmacist should not have railroaded you like that.

Personally I get my local pharmacist to do my flu jabs each year, Due to my asthma, essentially.

Most times I don't notice it, but I have felt the sore arm & 'off' once before.

As said by others, higher BG is expected when we're ill.

I see it as the body sending troops in to attack the invader.
It needs more energy to feed the troops sent to save us . So a cost worth suffering over the short term.

Hopes for a speedy recovery.
