I have seen recent reports on the success of this trial supported by Diabetes U.K I was wondering if anyone who tried it has ideas on the recipes for both that were used.

I'm in remission at moment but think maybe 2 or 3 days a week adopting this idea?

Would appreciate any feedback on this

Hi Bob. There are several threads on this already, you might want to take a look - eg
https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/bbc-story-on-shake-and-soup-diet.205571/

It's basically a low-calorie diet.

I don't think the trial was a success. They call "remission" having two HbA1c results under 48, three months apart, without glucose lowering medication. 8% of the people who started the trial achieved that.

If you search Newcastle Diet on the forum, this is the original research, I think that there are links to the recipes for "meals", the reduction in HbAc1 was noted as a side effect of the strict diet people are on before having bariatric surgery, it's basically a VLCD (Very low calorie diet) which can either be do using bought slimfast type shakes or real food followed for a maximum of 12 weeks.

I'm about to start this tomorrow (today actually as it is 2:22am).

Quite nervous and apprehensive about it, but it is something I'm relieved I've been given the chance to do it. I've dipped in and out of being T2 and then Pre-T2 and then back to T2 for a few years now. I've not taken it seriously at all. This will hopefully force me to do so.

The one about to do, does a total meal replacement for 12 weeks at 800 cals, then re-introduces you to food, a Mediterranean diet from what I understand. The whole thing lasts a year and I'm hoping to succeed.

Day 1, meal 2 of 4 - a sachet of spicy carrot soup, well I say soup, but it is more like a coffee-mate like powder with a savoury carroty flavour. Like a posh cup-a-soup.

So far, I'm hungry, but that is to be expected.

I officially start this next Monday, after a couple of months of waiting and then some supply issues that are now sorted out - I understand a few companies are used depending on where you are in the country. For me it's being run by Momenta and the Soups, Shakes & Porridge is supplied by Habitual.

It sounds very much like the Cambridge diet that was all the rage in the 80s - I remember spending a fortune on a 6 week course and trying to force it down and crying to my hubby because I felt so guilty spending money we really didn’t have at the time - made all the more difficult because I don’t like milk or milkshakes (what was I thinking)

I admire your determination to do this and wish you luck with it & really hope it works for you :)

XYLA are running the show for me, the powders are by Habitual, like you.

Day 1 - Interim update - Hungry like the Wolf. And also is what is the hungrier state; Hank Marvin, Lee Marvin or the Wolf?

When I did it, back in 89 through the hospital, i tried to plan lots of things to do each evening like going to the theatre, swimming, cinema, going round supportive friends, and long relaxing baths. I think you're doing really well. Shame the soups haven't improved much since the Cambridge diet ones. Best of luck

It’s not for everyone. I tried something similar in the 1980s in an attempt to lose weight and managed to lose approx 7lb in 6 weeks however it did make me very ill as my metabolism went into starvation mode. My GP told me to go home and have a decent meal and the endocrinologist he sent me to told me that I was one of his few patients who could blame their metabolism for their weight issues. He also warned me not go on any more low calorie diets as they wouldn’t work and make me ill!

I thought I would have a go with having a HbA1c test in the offing. I have been in remission for ages now, but not gone into the 30s no matter how I tried.
I bought some of the shakes in tesco and some skimmed milk, and started a few days ago. I was not hungry at first, but today I had a shake early on as I was going out, and was starving by mid afternoon. I would perhaps be better off fasting.
If I have two shakes that is about the amount of carbs I would have in a couple of meals, one with a dessert, so I don't know if anything much will change.
I am experimenting to see what effect a low calorie diet has on me - I used to turn grey, get confused and lethargic so I am not really hoping for great things.
