Started low carb low calorie diet - blood glucose still higher than expected!

Firstly, I did not even pretend to be quoting Prof Taylor when I said that (you will lose weight) as long as you eat fewer calories than you use. That is an obvious basic scientific fact recognised by all educated people. Secondly I did not so much as mention low carb diets. Just said that my own diet was 1000 cals real food, not the vlc diet that Prof Taylor prefers. It obviously works more slowly than the 800 cal diet supplied by shakes.
I am tired of the evasive, insulting and ever changing replies on this topic. I'm done with answering.

Meanwhile, back on track - How is it going now @JoeHo ?

Hello Everybody!

Thank you all for the discussion and advice.

I ended my fast at 48hr (pre-meal 5.5, post-meal 7.9) followed by a 24hr fast (pre-meal 6.8, post-meal 9.5).

So during my 24 hour fast my BG only dropped to 6.8. Any ideas?

Insulin resistance or beta cells not producing insulin?

I monitor my weight regularly and it appears to be dropping gradually.

You post numbers are a little high.
What are you eating? A raise less then two is ideal.
Even if you are fasting, if your meals are not low enough in carbs it would be difficult to get lower numbers.

I'm on a low carb diet.

I wouldnt call it keto because I don't take enough dietary fat.

Veg soups with protein.

Protein with veg / salad and diary / eggs.
Dressing usually olive oil and vinegar.

Veg I have include spinach, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, onions, mushrooms, tomato, limited carrot

No carbie foods - no bread, no potatoes, no rice.

This will explain (I hope): https://www.dietdoctor.com/why-is-blood-glucose-elevated-when-fasting

It takes time for blood glucose to drop to consistently low numbers - keep at it and you’ll likely see a downward trajectory. You may want to tweak and see what happens without tomatoes and onions, as well a carrot. I ditched all of them very early on, mainly because they tasted too sweet after a while. Onions have now been reintroduced, but in very small quantities and with absolutely no other carbs (mainly because I love them!).

I think @JoeHo may just be being a bit impatient. If you've really had T2 for ten years then your system has been out of whack for probably more like twenty - you'll need time to return to normal levels.

And my very limited understanding is that T2 insulin producing beta cells can recover if you reduce your bgs to normal levels, so there is every reason for hope,

Thank you for your encouragement! I do need to give it more time. I will keep at it. The effortless weight loss is already amazing!

Hi,

I feel it would be misleading to suggest your pancreas is not producing insulin, untill a definitive diagnosis with a c-peptide test concludes?
"Insulin resistance" is a little like the analogy of a blocked fuel filter in a car.. One may think initially that the tank is close to or is empty.?
A c-pep test would be closer to looking at the fuel gauge..

Folks, some posts have been deleted for derailing the thread. The OP did not request a debate on the merits of Calories in/Calories out and alternatives. While mentioning different approaches to weight loss is appropriate in the context of a broader response to the OP, bickering and point scoring about it is not. Any further such posts will be deleted.

I will continue with Keto / low carb OMAD and give it more time for BG levels to settle lower.
Also planning to mix in some longer 36 to 48 hour fasts.

I don't think I need a c-peptide test right now. The weight is coming down gradually and BG is down to pre-diabetic levels (5.5 fasting and post-prandial 7.8). It's still high but I'm going to give it more time.
