Statins?

@Bluetit1802 hi. Thanks I have asked in past but told it's not necessary that government state once a year is enough. I feel like they can't be bothered & don't care. I enquired about changing doctor but only one available is much to far for me to travel as I can't drive.

I am just referring to cholesterol tests, not the whole raft of tests we get with our HbA1c. If you mention you have changed your diet and want to see the effect, or that you are worried, they may oblige.

@Bluetit1802 hi yes I understood, I have asked before as I said & been told one a year is sufficient & government policy. I feel our surgery has taken on to many patients & don't really care.

Hi,

I remember that on Trust Me I'm a Doctor programme Dr M Moseley found out that he had high cholesterol and as a result of the research he was doing weighed up the pros and cons.... And everyone correct me if I remember this wrong but he opted to take and so start using statins...

I remember from the program that he took the state of his health quute badly as he hadn't been expecting it...
Is this the same doctor who is on a Keto diet, because I know one of them is from that program

Oh that is not good. I was offered a cholesterol test once every 6 months or yearly. They gave me a choice

I fully agree as some people are ok taking them while others have side effects as with most meds
I have to disagree with the both of you (Your post and the post you're replying to)
How does someone know they're 'ok' ? Would they take a regular, small dose of cyanide if they seemed 'ok' with it ?
After much research I've concluded they are noxious, even if they work in some beneficial way as well.
In the end it's a matter of faith, as well as knowledge. Currently I distrust statin-pushers who won't publish their data, and I choose to agree with the likes of cardiologist Aseem Malhotra who trained at world-renowned Harefield Hospital, along with a whole load of medical people who aren't hiding behind 'few side effects'. Obviously they also reject the cholesterol hypothesis.

It's a personal choice, but a narrative of 'being ok with statins' is meaningless for me. I felt ok when my BP was 180. Go figure.

Indeed, it is a matter of faith and of trust. I have tended toward those who would put their reputations, their careers and their livelihoods on the line to bring us information to aid us in our decision making. I like a man or a woman who will stand up in public, be it an audience of their peers or of lay people, and say 'This is just not right and you need to know the true facts'.

I have to disagree with the both of you . . . . . . .How does someone know they're 'ok' ?

You're 100% absolutely correct, a very good friend is always telling me that statins are fine because she doesn't exhibit any of the side effects. The "brain fog" and even the muscle weakness to an extent can be problems that you may not initially notice.

and some side effects don't arrive for many years ......

Recently i have had to have a scan on my upper arms both of which have been so painful the worst time of the pain is when it wakes me up from sleep, the scan revealed my tissues in both arms very imflamed now have been on statins for almost 10 years now and never had any bad reaction to them so am wondering if taking these is the cause of my pain...back to the Docs on the 23rd to see what he will do about it but am wondering should I stop taking them for a while to see if the pain goes away or improves

I cannot advise but would suggest it's worth weighing up the consequences of stopping. Is it going to be detrimental to your health in the short term? I'd like to think not, but I'm not a doctor, although I very much doubt that a doctor would know either and I fear that some doctors will always take the Professor Rory Collins line in thinking muscle pain and indeed muscle wastage has nothing to do with statins despite statins preventing the uptake of CoQ10, essential for getting energy to the muscles.

I don't know if you take Metformin, a side effect is the build up of lactic acid, which has been associated with osteoarthritis. It's lactic acid which make muscles feel achy after long walks or excessive exercise.

It's only another 4 days, so might be worth discussing a temporary halt. It's also probable that you wouldn't notice a difference in 4 days. I still get muscle pain having stopped 4 years ago. My total cholesterol is now down to 4 because of my low carb, and I'm not going to worry about a .1 here or there.

I was on Statins for more years than I can remember due to being type 1 for 42 yrs then after reading stories of muscle pains for which I was myself suffering I decided I would stop taking them, the muscle pains are getting less and it may be a coincidence but at every annual review my blood pressure is always elevated accept this year when it was actually low, it did make me wonder as I have changed nothing else!
