Statins

I heard about the possibility of developing diabetes from Statins, though I read that this isn't a great risk - but, a risk is a risk, right?

I also read about them raising BG levels, which I can vouch for as I take Atorvastatin, going to ask about Pravastatin when I go to see the doctor as it's said that's the only Statin that doesn't raise BG.

Unsure how much it raises by as I take Bisoprolol and that also increases BG :(

The film Statin Nation goes into depth about all cause mortality and statins. There is only an insignificantly small benefit of taking statins. In contrast a large percentage of people get severe side effects including muscle pain and memory loss similar to Alzheimer’s.

The article says

"He also reported that at least one in 21 statin users suffers muscle damage and one in 204 developed diabetes which, along with muscle pain, has been linked to the controversial cholesterol-lowering drugs aimed at preventing heart disease. "

I don't think they mention how many people were involved.

Bad wording on my part sorry - I was meaning, in another article I read in the past it said about being a low risk developing diabetes from Statins.

Though 1 in 204 as mentioned in this article is higher than I expected, if this is accurate.

My opinion is that 1 in 204 could probably become diabetic without taking statins. In my case the diabetes came first.
Well according to this site 1 in 16 Uk adults have diabetes, 1 in 204 developing it from a statin looks a rather more insignificant number ( not that Im in any way a fan of statins, I just like numbers to be meaningful)

The last two paragraphs sums it all up, I think. Withheld data and data sponsored by drug companies. Call me cynical but...

Yes I know its from the "Daily Express" comic but...

That's not so bad when backed up with some evidence. Dr John Abramson, mentioned in the article, has written two articles for the Lancet, a journal pro statin if I'm not mistake (as oppose to the BMJ). He wrote two articles for the Lancet in March 2017 (he's written a lot), one entitled "Lessons from the Controversy over Statins". Unfortunately I don't have access to the complete article.

@Deanoh I was on Pravostatin and my Hba1c rose from 48 to 54 - it soon dropped to 36 after stopping them. They also gave me dizzy spells and sleep problems which was why I came off them.

I also read that 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes

Ah interesting, I may give them a miss then, got no current side effects with medication I'm currently on and I doubt my levels would be much different either way to be honest due to being on Beta-Blockers also, which are also said to raise levels haha. Feel like I'm fighting a losing battle :)
