Highs and lows
Hi
Been diagnosed a month now as type 1
BS Levels started off very high teens and gradually got better
Im on Lantus and Novarapid
I am now taking 7 units of lantus before bed and today had just 1 unit of bolus before my 52g carb breakfast
At 17.30 tonight my BS was 4.2
I had a 40g carb lunch with no bolus at 14.30
Very confused, could this still be my basal level is wrong? I have reduced lantus from 12 units down to 7 in the past week and im still going low
Advice please people

Could be basal too high or could be that you are now in the "honeymoon phase". Google it as there's a lot to explain but basically when newly diagnosed and started in insulin your own pancreas can occasionally kick in and cause erratic BG levels.

Well if you had no bolus at lunch it has to be too much basal...

Thats what I am thinking, just a bit concerned at how little basal i am needing
Why might this be??

One can only assume your pancreas is still producing some insulin, maybe sometimes.

I'm T2, so applying logic, not experience.

Hello,
I'm 5 months in and my insulin needs are changing all the time. I keep checking regularly and have a snack if I go low. I've accepted to myself that the honeymoon phase will be random and have a small snack if I need to between meals to keep above 5.

I went low carb for a while and it really helped. I'm starting it again tomorrow as it was the only way I go low less often.

Hope that helps

Emma

I got diagnosed about 5 months ago and twice now for roughly a week each time my pancreas kicked in and given me some insulin... I didn't need to inject any for my meals during that time so I would advise to keep checking your bloods and when they start to go high again after eating carbs then introduce insulin back in. I ended up dropping my basal by 1 unit as well x

How low carb do you go Emmotha? and if it is really low do you not bolus for it?

I still bolused the same, but found that I would probably needed less if my will power hadn't won over and taken me back to carbs.

I was still having about 15-20g with each meal though, or if I had 0 carb I'd need a small carby snack to keep my BG at about 5

Just don't be afraid to reduce basal further. Some go through a period of not needing insulin at all for a while. The most important thing is keep testing regularly and adjust where necessary.

I also do low carb. On a good day 30g per day and on a bad day 50g. I bolus for all carbs that I eat depending on my current blood glucose level for example: I'm on a 1-10 ratio I'm having chicken, broccoli and great beans for my tea wich equates to 8g of carbs my BG is 6.4 I would take 1unit of insulin which would cover my food and then drop my BG back into the 5s ... However if my BG had been 5.1 then I'd eat a few blueberries to make it 10g of carbs so my BG doesn't drop.

I weigh everything. But Attemting to do more visual weighing now as I get really stressed when I eat out and don't have my scales x

the carbs are hard to give up, so you have gone back to the dark side of the force :)
it's part of our evolution that when carbs are about we lay down some fat for winter, it's just that carbs are always around now
