STOPTOVER, Smoke free October.

I really want 2 quit this month. I have smoked since I was 14 and I'm 65 now. I think 4 me it's not actually nicotine addiction because I don't think about smoking if I am busy with something that ISN'T at the computer. I did start a No Smoking Diary where I made sure that I was conscious of every cigarette I smoked but.......I set October 1st as my quit date but didn't last very long at all. Now I have set 31st October 4 my next quit date. With reference to a comment about not really wanting to quit - the part of me that hasn't stopped enjoying cigarettes seems to override my brain and body which tells me I NEED 2 stop.

Well, the first step is wanting to quit.
I picked a day when I knew I would smoke the most which for me was a Thursday (day off).that was my first step. Then each day was a battle not to light up.
E cigs helped.
Once I got to the 2 month mark I ditched he e cigs.
Now I can most days without any thoughts of smoking.
I certainly won't be going back to fags.
I've waited 35 years for this.
You can do it .

I once gave up smoking for 5 years then started again. Then I gave up for 1 year and started again but this time e cigs were an option so I tried that. Now it's been 2 years since I smoked. I still vape and even mix my own juice. I had a lung function test a few weeks ago and not only have i reversed any damage done by smoking but my lung function is now better than average! I haven't managed to get to 0 nicotine but to be honest I am not worried. I know exactly what goes into my e liquid. I just wish the scaremongering regarding e cigs would stop. I am pretty sure exhaust fumes from traffic are far worse but nobody is trying to ban cars.

I was the same ive tried and failed in the past quite a few times longest i ever did was 12 weeks. But this time is different i had to give up for health reasons i was coughing night and day constantly to point where it was making me sick. Also i was worried with the bank account forever going in the red and sometimes over the agreed overdraft incurring penalties.Good luck with your campaign why not make an app to see the smoking cessation clinic im sure youll have one in your area.

i find E-cigs to be expensive.I started out on E-cigs and paid £11 for 10 refills at sainsburys it was just a basic one that didnt have fancy liquid chamber.Where as the inhalator works out at £5.36p per week and doesnt need charging.

You find ecigs expensive Johnboy412000? Are you kidding? Surely even if they reduce rather than stop your cigarette consumption they are constantly saving you money? I simply don't get that excuse.

I have gone down Ecig route, initial cost £15, Ecig 1 bottle 50% B&H nicotine. 10 x refills £2.50, 2 x refills per week not even 1 x 20 cigs.

Plan 5 weeks @ 50%, 5 weeks @ 25%, then see where I am at.

Just the 1 bad day so far just feeling very tired apart from that so far so good.

Keep going all.

@JohnD54 - apologies for a slight diversion on your thread, but I wanted to ask Johnboy a question.

John - I've just read your signature and notice your HbA1c has gone up over the couple of months since diagnosis; "Hba1c was 6.4 in August its now at 6.6 on 9th October 2014 ". Is this correct? If it is, what guidance have you been given to help you reverse the trend?

Sorry for jumping down your throat Johnboy. I'm not usually one to look back with regret at anything, but when I think of the money, particularly tax, that I have lost through smoking, only for people to march out statistics about 'what smoking costs the NHS' I could spit. I don't, because I am a laydee, but if I did it wouldn't be as phlegmy now!

Yeah it has gone up i found that a bit weird but she said also my weight has gone up by 2kg so the weight gain has probably caused the spike.Ill have to try and get more exercise and get that weight coming down.

I hate to be gloom and doom, but although exercise will have an impact on your bloods, your greatest tool in managing your bloods, and indeed your weight is the food and drink you take on board. I'd urge you to maybe go back to your early threads where many peoplpe gave you very valuable advice. It's sort of feel ing to me that the advice you have taken from your nurse isn't working for you.

Sorry @JohnD54 - I know my post isn't smoking related.

12 days in and still on track, how's everyone else coping.?
Reasonably well, thank you. I am working on building my new identity.

Still have problems making the patches stick and considered taking the plunge and go off them but feel this will too big a risk to take.

I dont recall having any probs making the patches stick.they are waterproof so you can have a shower/bath.Just a case of being careful when you dry yourself not to fetch the patch off.I bet you feel better already for not smoking.Your health will be recovering now and so will your lungs. It took ages for me to clear all the **** outta my lungs.

My dad, who unfortunately is not very well these days, having suffered a number of strokes, was a very heavy smoker from the age of fourteen to the age of sixty five.

So some of the more vivid memories from my childhood are linked to his smoking.

I always remember having to listen to him coughing in the mornings for instance , the way his fingers were discolored yellow from the smoke, the way the smell of tobacco seemed to permeate his clothing and follow him as he entered a room.

Worse of all I remember the endless friction and arguments between him and my non-smoking mother, that always seemed to center around her trying to get him to give up smoking.

Neither I nor my brother have ever smoked in our lives.

Your situation with your father concerning memories of him and smoking are similar to mine. Regrettably with 3 older brothers and 1 older sister all us boys smoked. My elder brothers all stopped some years ago but I have persisted and doubtless would have continued If I hadn't been forced to reevaluate after the diagnosis of T2.

I have so far been one of the lucky ones, no outward signs of problems.

But to assist over all health am STOPPING.

Another week nearly over, how's everyone doing with the non smoking or in my case non smoking with the exception of Ecig?

I,hope, you are coping, I think we have an Antipodean friend joining us @miked.

Let us know how you are getting on.
