Hi
Im on day 4 of Gliclazide sr 30mg. Have been taking Metformin SR 500mg since Feb. Today I have a strange taste in my mouth almost metal taste. Im worried that it is something to do with ketones. I had lot of ketones in my urine sample when I saw diabetic nurse last week. Could it be side effect of Gliclazide?
Thank you

Hi snowysand, welcome to the forum. I believe a metallic taste is quite common with metformin. I expect someone who's taken metformin will be able to offer a bit of experience on this :)

Have you been given a different brand of Metformin SR on your latest prescription? Sometimes the makers vary, and apparently there can be subtly different effects from different makes.

I was Googling about Metformin and body odour last week - it might be worth Googling Metformin and metallic taste and seeing what comes up.

Hi thanks for replies.
I have been on the same type metformin since Feb and never had the taste before...Would it not have shown up before or is it something that takes a while to show up.. I have never taken Gliclazide before

Hi, I clearly remember when I was on gliclazide I had awful taste buds , once went to mackro shopping and even commented to my hubby that my tongue tasted like I had been sucking a coin!
Does this help? Hope it does , as it WAS awful , kept chewing sugarfree gum to get rid of the taste.
Anna. :D

The last time I had a very unpleasant taste in my mouth, it was due to a sinus infection. I doubt personally the ketones have caused the taste, but an infection could have caused both.

Thank you for your replies. As the day has gone on i have felt pretty rough, very dizzy and general blah. Blood levels are down to 11 pre lunch which for me is excellent! So the gliclizide must be doing something. I thnk if I feel dizzy tomorrow I will ring the diabetic nurse to see if its normal. I guess when your sugar levels have been in the 20's for a long time, its expected to feel naff when they are coming down?

Metformin is known for causing strange metallic tastes. When I first went on Met SR I had the weird taste for many months. When Gliclazide was added a year or so later it had no effect my taste whatsover. I've never seen any comments that Glic has a taste problem but I guess we're all different?

Hi, YEP you can feel bit ruff with low sugar levels after being high sugared for quite some time.
Your body has been used to the higher levels and when they start to come lower its normal to feel bit light headed and ruff too.
It does settle down as your body adjusts and adapts.
However if you feel faint dizzy? Best to ask your HCP to be on the safe side of things.
They are medically trained and qualified.
Hope this helps ?
Anna. :D
